Repairs are being made to the roof of the Post & King building in the way of putting on new tar paper, etc. H. L. Chandler, proprietor of the northern staa;e route, was in town the forepart of the week on business. Several of our local people attended the SaturJay night dance at New Pine Creek and all report an excellent time. C. Henkel Saturday left for Portland and other points in the northern part of the state to enjoy his summer vaca tion. Elmer McCulley was up from his ranch during the week and spent ijfew days locally on matters of busi ness. Murray Heard, who has been spend ing a few days on a hunting trip in the Warner country. Lair Thompson and Baby Alice and Mrs. Maude Braley will leave next week on a pleasure trip to Shovel Creek. Cal.. and on their return will visit Crater Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ahlstrom. this morning left for Klamath Falls, from which point Mrs. A. and the children will proceed on a visit to relatives and friends in Rogue River Valley. J. J. Hewitt, manager of the Hewitt Land company, is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. McKendree. While herel he is looking over the large holdings of his company on the West Side. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Langslet have rented the Colorado house, where Mr. Langslet will conduct his tailoring business as well as renting the rooms in the upper part of the building. Mrs. William Gunther. accompanied by her mother. Mrs. Cleland, and son, Kelton. returned the earlier part of the week after enjoying a several days outing in the upper Chewaucan country. Frank Schmidt and William Arzner were jn from the Keister ranch last week, having been subpoenaed as witnesses in the case where Keister was charged with chain ing a balky horse in order to make it go. Harry Hunter, of the Hunter Land Co., arrived in Lakeview last Thurs day evening and the following morning left on a trip through Harney county. It is reported that he has has a deal on for the purchasing of the Bill Hanley holdings. A party consistn.g of Messrs. Loyd. Jackson, Macnab and Patch, all well known local hunters. Tuesday started for the Chewaucan in quest of deer. They will be gone until the latter part of the week, and expect to bring back venison for us all. Silver Lake Leader: Tuesday this section was visited by a welcome and refreshing shower of .10 of an inch, and although a few of the boys who had hay down, went around with a pained expression on their faces, no damage was done. It is reported from the northern pari of the county that several Forest fires have occurred during the punt few days. it is not thought that the damage in either case was of very great extent, as the fires were dis covered before they had progressed very far. The Davis Creek Orchards Co. have purchased the corporation holdings, consisting of about 6.000 acres, and will subdivide the same into 'small tracts and place it on 'he market. The consideration was close to $300,000 and is one of the largest transactions that as taken place in Goose Lake Valley for a long time. 1 W. S. Brooks, he ot the breezy na ture who was here during the O. V. L. opening, is again with us. He came in a few days since to look over the situation here and to examine his hold ings before the arrival of the railroad. He is more optimistic than ever, if such a thing is possible and he will in the very near future be a close second to John D. Mrs. Mina Howe ami son Charles, of Yoncalla. arrived here last evening, having been called by the accident which happened to C. C. Pratt. Mrs". Howe's father. This morning the U. S. Land Office received notice of the restoration to entry of another lot of land in the Klamath project. The lands are located in township 40. ranges 7. 8, 11 anl 12. and township 41, ranges 8, 11. 12 and 18. Only parts of the town ships are to be restored to entry. From now on until the end of the season we may expect to hear reports, some more or less exaggerated, as to tlft number of deer seen in certain places, etc., etc. We know, however, that there is a very acute difference between venison and deer tracks and with us it will be a question of imitat- j ing the man from Missouri. They found an easy grade in getting over the summit, aa well as reaching it ! from both sides. They also located the ; new road across the valley near the j head of the lake. Cruelty to Animals j John Brooks and Andrew Kesteri were held last week by Justice Bailey to appear before the next grand jury j to answer to a charge of cruelty to ; animals. The horse belonged to W. B. Card and is of a balky disposition. J Brooks and Kestcr had hired the ani- ( mat to work in the hay field, but the j horse refused to work, whereupon a ! chain was placed around his body and j drawn between his forelegs. A team 1 was hitched to it and the animal was quite seriously injured in the resultant, procedure. Mr. Card thereupon swore out a warrant for their arrest with the ! result above staled, their bonds being ' fixed at $20 each.
