PRACTICAL WORK OF STATE COLLEGE The Oregon Agricultural College is j nothing if not modern. Even Us adver tising is done by the most approved ' and artistic methods. What could be prettier than the pamphlet that it! sends out to tell the public what the ! college is doing? In advertising beauty certainly pays, however barren of j financial returns it may be elsewhere, j says the Oregonian. ! The pictures in this pamphlet tell I more thn the letter press, though that j is as precise and informing as words ' need be. One picture presents a pair i . I I . . . , . : u . u 1 1 u& iiapjr iiuiKcio Willi biic tuuec students inspecting them. But it is not the pigs themselves which strikes the fancy so much as the legend under the cut. "Mortgage raisers," they are labeled. Is this not suggestive as well as accurate? Oreeon has never yet appreciated ! the Btaid and judicial pig at his full ' value. No animal brings in anything ; like the same profits for the same ex penditure of feed and labor, and yet the Willamette Valley is far from be ing populated with swine as it would be if the farmers appreciated their blessings better. The Agricultural College, we gather, is making some thing of a specialty of the pig, as it is also of the Jersey cow, and in due time the Oregon farmers will get the benefit. Other pictures show young men at work pruning and spraying trees. The women students are caught in the act of preparing and serving food, cutting out gowns and sewing. What could be more practical and useful? At the same time we must not make the mistake of thinking that all this is shorn of ideal values. The college has its artistic side. The higher as pects of work are not neglected, nor do the students leave without gaining that drudgery. The Argicultural Col lege harks back to the fine old theory of the renaissanice, that true art pro ceeds from the workshop. Many Idle Men There appears to be a general move ment of idle men toward the Pacific coast, according to people .traveling from eastern points to Californa. The sight of so many idle men has caused much comment among the travelers. Many of these men, it is said, have the appearance of mechanics or tradesmen, and profess to be looking for employment. Train men complain that they are experiencing difficulty in keeping these men from westbound freight cars and say that not for many years have they noticed so many loiterers in the vicinity of railroad yards, stations and along the right of way. Upon one or two occasions bands of these men have tak en possession of an entire freigh train.
