JACK KIMBALL IN
ROLE OF BOOSTER
Klamath Chronicle: Mr. and Mrs.
J. F. Kimball returned yesterday from
Lakeview. where they have been for
some time, while Mr. Kimball waa
J looking after the interests of the Wey
JerhauBcr Timber company. Mr. Kim
! bail atatea that he haa just closed op
all the business in connection with tha
leasing of the Weyerhauser land for
grazing purpose for th tin hHf
and will soon turn his attention to the
matter of organizing fire protection
within a short time.
The Weyerhauser lands in Klamath
and Lake counties have been leased to
the same sheepmen who had them laat
season, while the entire holding in
northern California have been taken
over by Albert Tournrjuiat. a big sheep
owner. These lands are in Modoc
county and embrace a very large area
of timber and grazing land. Mr. Kim
ball ia congratulating himself on this
particular deal, as .he believe he ha
made a mighty good transaction for hi
company. Mr. Toumquiat haa signed
a lease for five years, and aa payment
for the privilege of grazing his sheep
thereon, he i to pay half of the taxea
aaaessed against the land for that
period.
Mr. Kimball is not in a position yet
to state the full arrangerr.cr.is for fire
protection in the Weyerhauser holdings
thi season, but will have these details
worked out within a short time The
time will soon be here when forest
conflagrations will be a possibility,
and it is the aim of the Weyerhauser
representative to haVe their lands pa
trolled and looked after very carefully
during the dry season. In fact, a better
patrol will be maintained this year
than ever before and the possibility of
dangreous and costly fires will be re
duced to minimum under the efficient
management of this veteran woodsman
and fire-fighter.
Mr. Kimball states that all of Lake
county is jubilant over the prospects
of the coming railroad Ks says Gen
eral Manager Duniway, of the Nevada-Califomia-Oregon
railway, haa an
nounced that Lakeview will have
trains running into that place by Nov
ember 1st. He says Lakeview is to
have a grand celebration when the
road is completed, and .the first train
roils into that city. Announcement
haa been made that a depot to cost
(120.00 is to be erected, and the people
and the people are greatly enthused
over the prospect of having a railroai
at an early date.
BEST FRUITS FOR
EASTERN OREGON
Corvallis. May 9. "Care should be
exercised in the selection of varieties
of fruit for planting in Eastern Oregon,
says Prof. C. I. Lewis, of the. Oregon
Agricultural College horiculture de
pirmtent, "since the higher elevations
of that part of the state suffer more
or less from the severity of tbe win
ter and the drouth in the summer.
"As to apples, the Russian varieties!
will be the hardiest. These in low
altitudes are summer and fall varietiea
but often in higher altitudes they are
long keepers. The Red Astrachan,
Gravenatein. Duchess, Wolf River,
Wagoner, and Macintosh Red are the
best and most satisfactory to plant.
Occasionally nearly any of the stand
ard varieties grow sufficiently well for
family use. Varieties of some promise
in Buch sections are the Rome Beauty,
White Winter Pearmain, Delicious, and
Gano.
"The varieties of pears I would sug
gest for the region are the White Doy
anne, Seckel. Clapp's Favorite.
Peaches as a rule, should not be grown
in the higher elevations of Eastern
Oregon, but occasionally such varieties
as Alexander and Amsden do very well.
The Gobb's apricot is often success
ful." The four kinds of cherries suggested
by Prof. Lewis are the Lambert and
Bing sweet cherries, and Early Rich
mond and Olivette for sour ones. Twe
varieties of raspberries Guthbert and
Turner's Red are named as good,
and any of the standard varieties x of
blackberries, such as Kittatinny, Law
ton, and Eldorado, may be grown.
Red Jacket and Champion goose
berries, and Bederwood, Warfield, and
Clark's Seedlings strawberries are alao
mentioned.
Shearing Plants
The sheep shearing corralls and dipp
ing vats at Camas Prairie are now in
first class order. During the shearing
season the corralls will be in charge of
the sheepmen. ROSA McDANIEL.
My corralls on the West Side are now
ready for the sheep shearing season,
and I have a dipping plant in connec
tion. Will have a good crew and super
intend the work myself.
