' The fortitude with which he made his last ftand for life durinp the past three year afTords a glimpse at the in ner workings of his splendid character. He never surrendered. Telephone and Tele graph company, announced yesterday that within the next SO days work would he started on the extension of the telephone lines from Alturas, Cal., to Lakeview, Ore., a distance of about sixty miles. As this distance can only be spanned during the summer months all the work will he rushed. It is ex pected that the connections will be completed within sixty or ninety days. "When completed the line will afford direct eommuncation with Davis Creek. New Pine Creek, and w ill clso allow connecti-jni; with Cedarviile and Bid well. At Hot Sprinjjs a connection will be niaie with the California Northern Telephone and Telegraph company line for r?rvices into the Susanville and Honey Lake districts. Mr. Adams, who will supervise the work, h.is the credit of placing the present line between Reno and Alturas in commission. In addition he has ex tended lines throughout the state. For the past eight years he has been en gaged in the telephone business in of freight. Lewis Watkins has returned from Maxwell, Calif., ar.d reports that he is glad to get back to Goose lake. H. F. Ketzenback made a business trip to Alturas Monday. Mrs. Herbert Robbins expects tojjoin her husband here Wednesday from Oso, Washington. The Nugent-Richardson Construction Co. started work on the N.-C.-O. Monday. Ed Mulkey, Modoc County's Assess or, has been transacting his official ! Lee I'eall. business in Davis Creek the past few days. J. W. Drane moved upon his home stead Monday. A. G. Duhme, of the Fandango Lum ber Co., was transacting business in Alturas Monday. Miss Ruth Graham moved on her homestead the latter part of the week. Tom Sagus spent Sunday night in Davis Creek on his way to Lakeview. Mr. Sagus reports work on the "rail road progressing nicely.
