ADDRESS DELIVERED BY W. H. SHIRK W. II. Shirk addressed the meeting iim fnllowM : Mr. Chairman, I ,iol ii'H and (leiitlc inen : I regret that the auhject given Ine to talk on thin evening, wart not put in the hands of home one capable of doing it justice. It in a matter in which I feel very much interested and one which I think is of vital interest to the welfure and development of our county, iinl I feel thai you will emi I'lir with tin' in ttttH statement of the ipicxt ion. 'Die subject rcft-red t'i is "Tin1 l.nkeviev.' Hoard of Trade." The Lakeview Hoard of Trade was i orc.inied in l.altfvci -v on February 12. I'.hi i. 'I he pin of this oria'tiat ion ' wa- to u.lvcitise the m-m -lire, t of nil of Lake County, not alone I.:il.e tew or i I! Lake Valley, hut ill'- entire' county, and I will leave it to you. Ladii 4 and ( lent leiiieu, if this Hoiiid of Trade Ii.im not proeu l.y every pain- , phlet or cin iil.ir it Ims i.led, that the entire county has had it:i proper tdiarc of ml ert i:iiny . In the early (nu t of September. I " I'.', It ledd a county fair here in l.'ikcview, and I think tin- tiutli will hear me out in the a: ei t ion when I .' ay that nn hettir (piality of piiKlncts has ever; hee i on exhibition in any county in the Stati- than was hliown lit thi f.iir. There were prodint.s frmn every valley in t lie count v, and I repeatedly heard it aaid by parties in attendance at this fair, an I some of whom had1 just came from the Alaskan Kxpoid- lion, at Seattle, that in no far as the j quality of our exhibits wi re concerned they were as johkI s they had nen at ,' that .'reat cxjxihition; that they excel!- . ed i:n in ipiautity only, and if you stop to coie iiler that those exhibits of ourx. , wen- himply a heleclion out of the or- ; dinary rout ine of production, as the; fair wns not tlioncbt of until about , live weeks before it was held, then in- ! deed, it i.s truly vnrdeiful that the! piality of thi exhibits we re so xccll cut ; soil and climate must have been j largely respnnt-ible for the excellent ipiality of the priMluct, rather than thej farmer, as the latter had not the time : to nourish and develop by his cure alone ; ! therefore I contend that this fair Vcn- i fieil evervtliinL' Iiulilislnd in the litifa- ' ture put out 1 v this Hoard of Trade, This fair v as h imply a concrete form! of advertisement, u demonstration, as well as a coiil'irmation of what this ' Hoard of Trade has p -ublishcd of thiH f count v. And I want t i cull your attention to ' the fact that the Kate of some of t he farms in this valley, which brouKKt I , , n. I prices liinK.nc as lue.h as fl.Ii.W) lK'r acre, was made subseiUelit to the boost-I inir i one liv t us Soard ol innlo. ltit'iio you. fair alone cost f 1 171 .1.1, nearly all of w hich was awarded in premiums on exhibits; very little lu.-in(f used for incidental expenses. The c;rnss ilisliarsments by the Hoard of Trade, up to date is $:!lki.J7, thus you see it cost thin organization (piite a little to advertise. Hy advcrtiHin I do not only mean literally, but also by Kivinn tbe htrancr within your door appropriate entertainment, allow ing them the resources of your com munity, etc. At thin present day and date, there ia scarcely any busim'SH, even though it may be u private busi tli'tiH, hut wdiat linda it profitable to ad vertise. I havo received a jreat many letters in the last two years, asking for literature on this county. Such letlers I usually turn over to tho vtecrctary of tho Hoard of Trade, who usually nv.iila the purlieu a pamphlet Kotten I'ji hy thiH Hoard and which invarial ! Rive 4 the desired information. As I paid bo fore, the boosting hua In u for tho en tire county, unit the organization haa been almost entirt ly nupported by tho people of I.Hkeview, and the exa'nso is becoming liurduimomo to tho few who are utill loyal to this good cause. Now what 1 would liko to ace, und I would recommend that every town and 'valley in our county organize u Hoard of Trndo, Chamber of Commerce or HooHter Club of Home kind for the pur pose of advertising their purticulur lo cality, each furnishingthcir own adver tising literature, thus jointly getting out a booklet or pamphlet, nutting forth the resources and udvutiUigoa which we have to oiler to the hotne- aeckcr nml Investor. Every man In the rounty rdioiild lend hin upHirt Ui aome mndi orKaniwition within the rounty. If there in no Hoard of Trade or organ ization of any kind In hin own valley or town, then tin should afnliate with Homo tHMinlrr rluli most convenient. Tim initiation fee have been elim inated from our Hoard of Trade. o that, now it eorta lut one dollar per month, to belong, "d if the organiza tion had the membership to which it in entitled, the due could be reduced to M cents a month. I hope every one present will become member of the Lnkeview Hoard of Trade. NOT It I'. FOIt IMIILK .MION I Not Cool L.i ml ) lieiiiiriiiient ol the Interior.
