Elliott, of Salem, was elected State Forester to day over S. C. Bartrum, of Koseburg, at the first meeting of the new State Board of Forestry. MemK-rs of the loard say that Elliott was selected lie cause of his long practical experience in the timber industry, and that he will devote his time largely to tne practical work of the office, while his deputy will have charge of thework in the office itself and the publicity features in connection with a campaign to wan! off the destruction of vast tim bered resources by fire. State Forester Elliott has long been employed by the Spalding Logging Company, of this city, and has been engaged in various capacities in the timber business for thirty years. At one time he was at the head of the Oregon and California fire-fighting forces, organizing them uvA keeping the company's loss at the lowest notch. No selection of the deputy has been made, the State Board instructing Forester Elilott to reserve this ii pointment until he can secure a man of good technical training who wili be able to handle the publicity work and take charge of the office details in con nection with the policy which will be outlined bv the Forester and the board. The buard decided that a publicity j policy oi wiue scope snouiu he inaug urated, that the new law and its pur port be placed fully before the people.
