At lant I arn in Irriperinl valley and am lad I concluded V corne here. Warren Shar tel, Dr. (liliHon, Sarriniiu un-l myHelf arrived liere yi-Hl.erday and thin morn irij? we took an autornoliik ride tlown the niHt Hide of the valley through Holtville to (aloxii-o, on the Ixirder lii-tween I J. S. and Mexico, and lack to thin city through IIcIkt, KI Ct-ntro and Im-rial City, a (lititarice of f milt-H, and I annuri: you we had a de lightful ride through a wonderful val ley. 1 waa aKtonihhed at the improve ments made in ho Hhort a time. Thin town in 2'K) feet In-low the Burface of the ocean, and the valley of Inijx rial coriHiHtH of 'I'Kl.lJOfJ acrea of level land ; in one half in a Htate of hi'h cultiva- ! tion, arid chit-fly accomplinhed in altout ! four yearn. Thin iH true enough a . land of Hurmhine ami flowers, alito a I land of hotf and hominy. Pis prrow on muddy (Colorado water and alfalfa in j 9 monthH to lie fat hotf worth $20 fter head, and there are thousands of them acre. It is the Itewt paying liUHincHt) in I the valley. Some men who were poor J five years ao went into Hwine business ' and are reported to lie worth $100,000. Eight crops of alfalfa are grown in one year and the first crop in now being cut. CHttle and hheep from Arizona : and Mexico are shipped here and fatted j for the market. All land must be irri gated and ull water comes from the Colorado river and through Mexico, and is very muddy and that mud ferti j lizes the soil. It is too muddy for mis- qui toes to live on it, so that pest is j scarce The summers are too hot for (lies, so they are here only during the colder months. 1 he annuual raintall is from 2 to inches, so that the indus trious man can lalior 12 months in a j year. V ages are aiiout the same as in Surprise. Kucnlyptus trees grow as high here in five years as loucust trees in Surprise do in u generation. There are four high schools in the valley and the one at El Centro, the county seat, cost $t"0,00. The county seat is four years old, with a population of 1500 people. It has a aoild block of brick buildings 700 feet long and fullly GO feet deep and Home of it two storied high, built, rumor Hays, by a man pon HCHsed principally of cheek. He owned the town site and had the county seat located there by promising every voter who would vote for his location a town lot, and religiously kept his promise. How is that for politics? Meixcali, just south of the line in Mexico, is said to have aiiout .100 in habiUntp, and two-thirds of these are saloon keepers, prostitutes and rene gade Americans. This valley has a great future, unless the Colorado river destroys it. The county is dry. No saloons or red lights in it, and to these facts I attribute largely its wonderful prosperity, remarkably industrious in habitants and brilliant future pros pects. It has two serious objections - the danger of being inundated by the Colo rado river and the excesisve heat near ly three months in the summer. WM. T. CKESSLER. SHE LOVED SNUFF. Remarkable Will and Funeral of a Queer Englishwoman. The will of Mrs. Margaret Thomp son, which Is preserved as a eurhtslty at Somerset House, Kngland, Is a trib ute to the delights and consolations of HnulT. The testatrix directed that In her coffin should be burled with her all her handkerchiefs and sufficient of the best Scotf-h snuff to cover her body. This she preferred to flowers, as "noth ing could be nmre fragrant and so re freshing to me as that precious pow der." Further, the six greatest snuff takers In the parish of St. James. Westminster, were to be her bearers. Six old inaTds, each bearing in her hand a box filled with the best Scotch snutT to take for their refreshment as , they walked, were to bear the pall, j Iiefore the corpse the minister was to . walk, carrying nnd partaking of a I pound of snuff. At every twenty yards a handful of snuff was to be delivered to the bystanders, and at the door of the testatrix's house were to be placed two busLIa of the same quality of Riiuff for gratuitous distribution. In order to insure the carrying out of her wl-dies the testatrix made the legacies L'iven bv the wiU dependent upou an exact iiihI literal fulfillment of the j i nnilitions above named. In .closing she bade all concerned to regard suuff as the grand cordial of nature. Careless. She-My little brother shot off hla gun this morning, and the bullet went through my hair.
