Burr's Self Control.
Aaron Durr wus by nature and train
liiK a lunu of extraordinary self con

dote told by Itufu Chonte to I'.lebarU
II. laua, recorded In Mr. Dana's "lMa
ry," llludtrntea tho culluusuesa wlilcb
aided liurr bo greatly In controlling
hlumelf. Several years after the death
of Hamilton, killed by Durr In a duet,
BurrTlslted Boston, end Mr. Devereux
of Salem paid nlm some attentions.
The visitor was taken to the Boston
Atheueum. where, while the two men
were walking through the gallery of
sculpture, Mr. Devereux happened to
catch alght of a bust of Hamilton.
The thought flashed across bla mind
that Burr might not care to be con
fronted with the sight of the features
of the man ho bnd elaln. But no. Burr
was undisturbed. He also espied the
bust,, and. although Mr. Devereux bnd
instinctively turned away, ho walked
up to it and said In a 'oud tone: "Ah!
Here U Hamilton:" Then, passing bla
tinkers along certain lines of the face,
be added, "There was tho poetry 1"
Hamilton's contemporaries gave him
credit for posBossIug a poetic mind.
Whan Beau Nath and Wesley Met.
Beau Nash, though but au ludillcr
rnt churchgoer, not only went to hear
Whitefleld preach, but attended a serv
ice at Bath held by John Wesley. The
incident U related In Southey'a "Life
of Wesley:"
"While he was preaching this re
markable personage entered the room,
came close to the preacher and de
manded of him by what authority ho
was acting. Wesley made answer,
'By that of Jesus Christ, conveyed to
me by the present archbishop of Can
terbury, when he laid liU hands upon
me and said, "Take thou authority to
preach the gospel." Nash then af
firmed that be was acting contrary to
the laws. 'Besides,' said he, 'your
preaching frightens people out of their
wits.' 'Sir,' replied Wesley, 'did you
ever hear roe preach'f 'No,' said the
master of ceremonies. 'How, then,
can you Judge of what you never
heard f Nash made answer, 'By com
mon report' , 'Sir,' suid Wesley, 'Is uot
your name Nash? I daro not Judge of
you by common report. I think It not
enough to Judge by.' "
