arsenic and o::e other, the name of

moned as a witness fur the prosecution
and produced a sensation by refusing
to testify on ttie ground of self incrim
ination. Afterward 1 consented to give my
evideme. I Informed the court of the
won.au's visit to me. of her request for
a pofson that would leave no trace and
the use she proposed to make of It.
Then I told them that I had given her
the AW. At this point a technical ob
jection was Interposed by the defend
ant's counsel, and the judge sustained
him. I was forbidden to tell what was
In the pill, the reason being that It had
not been proved that the pill had been
used. This left me la a very unfortu
nate position.
After a long trial Iho woman was nc
rjultted of the charge of murder, and
the ehar-'e of fraud was never pressed
The prosecution had failed to prove
(the knexv that the man who xxas buried
xxas her husband's brother or that nhe
had poison"-! hiai. Ib-r counsel con
triced to throw all the blame on her
husband, who had disappeared.
After her iioiiittal the woman came
to tee nie. She was curious to know If
I had been deceived by her story about
the bet and If I had really given her n
traccless pill. Ilefore replying I asked
her to explain the case to me, and, aft
er a Bolemn promise on my part to
keep her net-ret. the did no.
Her husband's life was largely In
sured, and nlneo they were an 111 mated
couple she resolved to poison him.
Just as Bhe was about to give him the
pill I had furnished her her husband's
brother came to the house for a visit.
Ills health had been broken down by
excesses, especially drugs that he had
taken In large quantities. While at
their house lie suddenly died, probably
of heart failure. Tho woman proposed
to her husband that lie disappear and
his brother, who resembled him close
ly, be burled In his stead. This was
done.
I told her kIih would find un explana
tion of my part in the matter In the
paper the next morning.
My explanation recited my experi
ences as to a traccless poison and my
desire to make a test case. The whole
filled txvo columns, at the end of which
I gave the contents of the pill I bad
given the woman.
It was made of bread.
