Not His Dogmas. r Dr. rklDTJOP NANUN, Esolorar and Diplomat. IT in for the stata to domain! that, whatever his religious views may be, every citizen should to given good, Round ethical idVas fit to make him a useful and skillful member of the community. And they should be given him in such a way tkat they will LAST HIM FOR LIFE, not to bo shaken by what ever doubt hi religious faith may have to encounter. The search of truth should bo not only a pleasure ; it has to be till sincere. It la eascnuai that young people shown learn from the beginning that SINCERITY w the one virtue which U at the buis of all ethics. Another virtue of fundamental importance is modesty. Let the desire bo to do everything as well aft possible and the satisfaction to feel that we have done so. But also let it be impressed upon the young men never, when there is a choice, to do any thing which an bo done EQUALLY WELL OR BETTER by some one else. Finally, it should be remembered always that it is not the views that a man holds or the dogmas he believes in that arc of importance for his fellow creatures. It is his ACTS. Even the loftiest dreams above the clouds are of little avail if they do not lead to action. Whilo the religious dogmas of every age have been continually changing with the growth of human thought, ethical ideas early reached a comparatively high level, and certain leading principles have changed comparatively little. I give as examples the ethical idens of the CtvvV religion, of Buddhism and of ChrUtianitv. IT IS EVIDENT THAT fOft THI COMMUNITY AND THE STATE THE ETHICAL IDEAS OF THE CITIIENS ARE OF THF QREATE8T IMPORTANCE, WHILE A MAN'S RELIGIOUS D00MA3 SHOULD B ENTIRELY WIS PRIVATE CONCERN.
