Investigation as to the MERRILL BUSINESS
Cause of Sheep Poi- MEN ENTERPRISING
son in g in Lake County Send 0utLocaI Paper t0
(Jilbert 1. Brown, actio supervisor
for Fremont Natioual Forest, witti
headquarters at Lakeview addressed
the followiog letter May 3rd to Prof.
Pernott, Corvallia. in regard to
ebeep poisoning in this county:
On April 30, the (.tct achs of to
sheep were forwarded to you for diag
nosis. Sheep are still dying in the same
manner, hut all coccerned uave so
far been unable to determine the
cause.
1 have not as yet been able to ob
taio any information that would as
sist io determining the cause of death.
They first get stiff, lose control of
their legs and die in 18 or 20 hours.
Mr. Brown received the following
in reply from U. E. Bradley, of the
Oregon State Experiment Station un
der date of May 13, which will be of
interest to the sbeep men of this sec
tion :
Professor Pernott has asked me to
write you further concerning the
sheep poisoning question. As he ex
plained in his letter to you, we found
nothing on examining the stomachs
which you Inclosed, 'Lat would give
a clue to the po'soninir, as the only
abnormal condition noted was a
blackening cf the inner coating of the
stomach, which probably was a post
mortem conditiou. From your des
cription of the manner in which the
sheep died it seems very probable it
mubt be a poisonous weed which is
the cause of the trouble, and the two
weeds or plants obtainable at this
time of the year on the range that
are koonn to be cioisouous are lark
spur and the poison camas. The cm
teuti of the stomachs whii-h von nt
were very fine bo that it was diffi
cult to identify them by microscopic)
means. In bullet d 45 of the Mon
tana Statiou and bclletiu 113 of the
Colorado Statiou. as well as In the
year hook of the Department of Ag
riculture for 1900, descriptions are
given of investigtaions no larkspur
poisoning as well as other poisonous
plants obtainable ou the range. The
symptoms of larkspur poisoning are
stitfnesa of the limbs, great difficulty
in breathing, and the animal usually
dying in a short time in spasms.
The antidote as worked out by Chest
nut and Wilcox is a one per cent so
lution of permanganate of potash
mixed with a one per cent solution
of aluminum sulfate given to the
sbeep in the early stages of the pois
oning. These compounds are now fur
nished in capsules ready for use, I
understand. In cases where the sheep
Is in the last stages of the poisoning
a hypodermic injecion of a one
fourth or one third grain of atropine
sulfate, which is a powerful heart
stimulant, has been used succeno
f u II y. A dash of ammonia in the nos
trils has also been used in the last
stages of the poisoning.
An examination of the range where
the sheep are known to have been
poisoned will determine whether the
plants are obtainable there or not,
and a close observation of the sheep
in tending would also confirm the
inarter as to wherther either of these !
plan's have beeu the source cf the I
difficulty. j
If we can assist in any way further j
in this matter 1 trust you will feel i
free to call upou us. ;
City Wholesalers
The Merrill business men are of a
wide awake and business-like sort.
iuaemuch as they are good advertisers
and also have subscribed for the local
paper to be eeut to hu&iuess men of j
the large cities of the Coast. There!
is no question but that a local paper
going to such men will have its influ
ence. Marshall Field, the great Chi
cago merchant, when he got an order
for goods on credit, always sent first
for the local paper. If it was well- I
patronized by the business men, ere- j
dit was granted, otherwise not. He
said no factor in a community indi-1
cated the worth of its people or of I
the business life of a town so surely J
as the local newspaper. If it was
handsomely printed, ably edited, and j
filled to overoflwing with home ad
vertising, you could bank your last
dollar on it being a live and bustling
town. Io this conection we will
say tbat we are doing our part and
doing it well for this town, but regret j
to say tbat not over half of the buis- i
ness mterests of the town take space
in these columns, which is their loss
if not our gain.
