Croaalug the Ems, he went on. beg ging by the way. till he reached the outxklrts of Quakenbouk, where be waa met by a man. wbo aald to him, "Holy father. I have an order from hla eminence Cardinal Richelieu to In vite you to hla palace In Paris. "Lend on. replied the friar. "I am honored In an Invitation coming from ao great a churchman." The man turned his back for a mo ment and tbe friar brought bla staff down on bis bead. He sank on the ground with a broken skull. "Ton think It beavyr said the friar. "So it la. It Is filled with lead." Then the ungrateful and unmerciful friar pro ceeded on his way. Tbe next of tbe cardinal's intercept era bad not been so well Informed aa to tbe guise of tbe messenger of tbe king of tbe Netherlands. He was Btatloned at a ferry across the Wen or river and did not suspect the friar. "Ferry you across, holy man?" he aald. "That I will." There waa now but one route avail able for some distance, and tbe cardi nal had directed that every traveler passing that way be searched. A num ber of times tbe friar waa stripped and carefully examined. One party even broke to pieces the rosary that hung about hla waist For this the father called down upon the man who com mitted tbe sacrilege tbe anathemas of the church. They were a superstitious people in those daya. and the fellow. convinced that tbe pilgrim waa what he pretended to be, begged on hla knees thut be would withdraw the curse. The friar told him that he bad often been molested on bla pilgrimage and would not remove the curse nnleaa be were furnished with an order that be be permitted to travel without fur ther Interference. This waa given blm. He withdrew bla anathemaa and gave the party hla blessing. The friar went on. begging by the way. giving bis blessing to those who gave him sustenance and shelter, till he came to tbe Elbe. On tbe banks of this river the passages were all guard ed by the cardinal's secret emissaries, who. had they been known to tbe Prussian government would have been banged and quartered. Thla waa the last line it had been thought advisable to guard. Tbe friar bad crossed the river and waa tramping through a wood when, men sprang from behind trees and downed blm. As soon as he could make himself beard he told them of bla paas and produced It They were much astonished, for they had been advised that tbe messenger was traveling In tbe guise of a mendicant However, they knew the men who had given him a free passage and let him go. This waa the last time be waa stopped. One morning the king of Prussia re ceived word that an envoy from the Netherlands waa in the antechamber. The king, who waa expecting news of the treaty, ordered the envoy admitted at once. When he saw a friar be was astonished. Rut the friar, wbo bad thrown off his saintly mien, told the king that he bad brought a copy of the treaty. When directed to produce it be aald he must have a surgeon. A sur geon was called, and the friar, expos ing hU aide under the ribs, told blm to feel till he detected a small lump. Tbe surgeon, having discovered it was re quested to make an incision over it. Thla done, a piece of wax was with drawn from between the musclea.' The wax waa broken and a lump of thin compressed paper revealed. This being carefully unfolded, tbe king bad a copy tf the treaty.
