ChleiiKH. n Wlseon nit! dairyman says: The Swiss ealtle In this itmntry are not so widely known its the other classes nf cattle, its their tititnliers are small. Tin ehillt at ftilr Is not very large. The following characteristics lire marked: Slr.e. form and color, especial ly of the head, ears, escut.heon. udder and tei'ts. The size Is large and sub stantial, form linn and elegantly pro portioned, color shades from dark to light chestnut brown. The llht shade Is especially observable In the l oft of hair between the horns, on l lie Inside of the ears and In n narrow line iiUiii the back. Horns, which are rather short, are waxy and with M.u k tips Nose Is black and. with the moiilh, surrounded by a mealy colt n d hand A yellow strip along the ml. Nile nf the under lip crosses o cr lo the upper lip and extends up the sides of the nos trils. A light streak runs along back from head to tall; black switch, hoof and tongue; straight hind legs, wide thighs and heavy quarters. Such remarkable persistence In marked Hltits denotes unmistakably the Integrity and purity of the hreed. Klnce. according to the well establish ed, laws of hereditary descent, the pe culiarities of other breeds with which this might have been missed would : almost certainly sooner or later have ! oropied out to a degree to challenge observation In a manner not to be luls- tukeu. In descendants from the cattle i Imimrted into this country some years ago no such signs of crosses with for ' elgn broods have ever loen exhibited. ' This Integrity of the breed is nil the i more Important because many of the 1 traits exhibited by these cattle are ; among the most valuable, j From actual observation we find ' they (Tmmi well with other breeds, pro- (luring a very desirable gnide of cat ! tie. Many Imixirtatiotis of Swiss cattle have been made into this country. A herd was Imported receutly to the cen tml states, and the progeny of a herd A BUOWN SWISS row. that was Imported several years be fore and which has been scattered through ail the states has resulted lu I the production of some remarkably I good dairy cows. The Hrowu Swiss have been given a good try out in I Green county. Wis., where they have j proved to be au excellent and hardy ! breed of dairy cattle. Hesldes the geu I erous flow of milk each cow will pro duce a healthy and hardy calf and keep up the jierformance year In and year out. We find it no uncommon thing for cows to produce sixty pounds of milk per day and to be milked up to calving time. At the age of eight een to tweuty years the Swiss cow Is i still profitable without including her , calf. There are many classes of cattle, but I In none of the herds which I have In spected have I seen cattle that 1 cou j sldertd the eipial of the Swiss stock. , Their ancestors, having been raised lu j the pure mountain air of the Alps, j give theto very strong constitutions. 1 Killing Lice on Hogs. We have a herd of from 'JoO to '.NX' Herkshires. and the prevention of lice has iu years past been no small propo- sition for us to contend with, says a. prominent breeder. We have a scheme j now which In Its results Is more et-1 fectlve than anything we have yef j tried, and we have used coal tar prod-1 nets, kerosene emulsion, machine oil i and many other things. We have wal-1 lows for our swine, which contalu wa-j IIT IU U lll-lllll Ul 11-fliJ U llllll l feet, maintained fresh, no stagnant wallows. We always put some lime In these pools. We buy crude oil, pro cessed, by the barrel, which costs about 10 to 12 cents per gallon thai way. Once a week, when lice appear we draw off three or four nuartfl ol this processed oil and pour over tb surface of this pool, upon which It Im mediately spreads and forms a coating Tbe bogs do not dislike this oil, ant frequently they wallow Just the same When they emerge from the water i bit of this oil Is deposited over the en tire surface If the bog, under the arm pits and In other places where tbe Hot most frequent. It keeps the skin oi the animal In good condition and kill the nits as well as the lice, someth!n we have been able to accomplish wltt no other remedy. Barley For 8wlna. While corn Is conaldered the grea fattening grain for pigs, tests havi shown that other grains may be sub stltuted In a great many rases, sayi a prosperous swine breeder. At sonu of our stations barley bas been tested In comparison with corn, the resul being very favorable to tbe barley. Ii general. It may be said that tbe result have shown that barley Is not qulb equal to corn, pound for pound, but t very close to It, and when we conslda the high quality of the carcass pro dnced by barley feeding we may al rt!"rt nay It surpasses corn as a grab fo - producing a blgb grade of pork. i Mrg Everywhere, but We are going to make it doubly interesting to vou.
