A Safety Device That Has Been Satis

F.very little whl!e we read of a house
wife tieing killed or maimed through
overbalancing herself while manipu
lating a pulley line. Some women.
' more careful than others, have a piece

uot lu use and If left 111 Hriunneutly i
Is unsightly aud danj,n-i'ous, as it is
likely to break If a real strain comes
uJion It.
The following safeguard has been In
stalled In one houstwith satisfactory
results and at little cost:
Take four screw eyes, one-quarter or
three-eighth Inch. Screw two lu the
casing, one on each side of the window,
at such a height that a line between
will come up well toward the aruiplt
when the woman is working on the
line, aud screw lu the other two about
eight Inches below these. Get a piece
of flexible cotton clothesline, put lu an
eyelet, or what Bailors call a "thimble."
at one end aud secure the other against
raveling either lu sailor fashion or by
whipping with a piece of twine.- Then
pass this latter end through the lower
left screw eye, cross the line diagonal
ly to the top screw eye on the right,
over horizontally to the one on the left
Ide, carrying lt down diagonally to the
lower screw eye on the right side. Pass
the end through the thimble on the
other end, haul the Hue taut aud secure
by a half hitch aud simple running loop
that can be easily opened, and the life
preserver is In place and ready for
work. It la strong and yields enough to
the weight not to Interfere with work,
and It makes lt Impossible for a wo
man to fall through the window.
Renovating Straw Hats.
As many of last season's straw hats ;
could be UHed by economical women j
If they were not spotted or sunburned, j
It Is well to know a simple way of !
cleaning them. Split straw or white j
mthin should be scrubbed wdtb a weak I
Bolutlon of oxalic acid aud water, using ;
a gmnll stiff brush. HI use with clear I
water, using as little as possible, bo as I
not to wet the straw any more than j
necessary. Sprinkle the dump hat with
precipitate of sulphur aud leave It In
the sun. When dry, brush the bat and
It will lie found evenly white.
Colored straws thtit have become
soiled should be rubbed with a piece
of velvet dlpied in gasoline. For black
braid or straw alcohol Is sometimes
effective. Ou black chip even liquid
