BARNUM'S OLD UQN.
How the Grsat Showman Turnod
His
Doath to AeoounC
Among tbe features of tbe parades
of the Barnum circus there was for
merly one that never failed to attract
attention. On the top of one of tbe
wild beast cages lay an enormous lion.
He was not couSned In any w ay. and
nervous people watching the parade
would shudder at the sight and con
template the terrible possibility of the
lion springing Into the midst of tbe
rrpd.
Rut the venerable old king of beasts
had reached tbe leonine dotage, and
stiffened muscles and blunted claws
rendered biin harmless. He was as
mild as it kitten aud In the winter
quarters, where be was allowed to
roam at will, sometimes had to be pro
tected from the onslaughts of Irrever

One night lie wandered from the

he chanced on a barn where a meofc
eyed cow was placidly chewing her
cud. A faint Bicker of the slumbering
Jungle spirit stirred his pulse, and.
with a crashing blow of the huge fore
pav. the cow was slain; then, lying
down beside his victim, he went to
sleep and dreamed of the time when he
was a shaggy little w help playing with
his brothers under tbe bright suu of bla
faroff African home.
In the morning the owner of tbe cow,
a stalwart female with tbe blood of
Irish kings In her veins, entered the
hnrn with milk pall In band. She was
filled with wrath at the sight that met
her gnr.e. With a keen edged as In her
haud and grim determination in her
eye she fearlessly approached the sleep
ing lion, and when the men sent out to
search for him arrived he lay cold In
death. Baruum promptly paid for the
dead cow and engaged to appear on
exhibition "the 'womuu who lu mortal
combat bad slain a lion."
