NATIONAL CONVENTIONS,
Tbsy Mceeedsd the System of Nomi
nation by Caucus.
Conventions have not always nomi
nated our presidents snd vice presi
dents. For more than thirty years
prealdeutlnl candidates were named by
a caucus made up of members of the
house and the senate. This system
die t when In 1824 tbe csucus Instated
upon by Martin Van Huren and other
friends of William II. Crawford or
Oerirgla defeated Crawrord. which
threw the election Into the house on
account of the scattering electoral vote
rsused by the entrsnce of Clay. Cal
houn, Jackson and John Qulncy Adams
In the race. This fracas elected Adams.
The campaign of 1828 In consequence
was some what demoralised, and In
1831 tbe Republicans followed tbe ex
ample the autl-Masonlc party bad set
the year before and met In conven
tlon In Baltimore to nominate Henry
Clay. The Democrats bold their first
national convention In the same city
the following year, nominating Martin
Van Hureu for vice president The
dominating figure of the party. Andrew
Jackson, needed do Indorsement of bis
candidacy for the presidency.
The Democrats In 1S.T3 and 1840
nominated Van Buret) for the pre I
dency In Baltimore, and the Whigs
nominated Clay In the same place In
1841, when the Democrats named Polk.
In 1S35 ltomulua M. Kaunders Intro

Tbo customs Installed at these earlier
conventions which succeeded the tyrao

A COMPLETE RECORD
e KaVc made ah entire transcript of alllRecords in Italic County,
which, in any way, affect Real Property in?thc count j.
We have a complete Record of every Mortgage anJ, transfer
ever made in Lake County, and every Deed given.
ERRORS ROUND,
In transcribing the records we have found numerous
mortgages recorded in the Deed recoid, and not indexed; and
many deeds are recorded in the Mortgage record and other
books. Hundreds of mortgages and deeds are uot indexed
at all, and aie most difficult to trace up from the leebrds.
We have notations of all these Errors:
Others cannot find them. We have spent hundreds of dollars hunting up
these errors, and we can guarantee our work.
