THE VICE PRE5IDENCY
It U tl singular tiling that for years
the vice-prei:.lential office was ihui
. persona t;rnta to most aspiring jioli
ticians, not to mention statesmen.
. The oflice went bejjyiiiij;, and it usu
tjHy' jr?? r!v?n to some broken-down

Since Mr. Roosevelt, after repeated
refusals, in the sleepy midnight hoC?,
promised Ilanna be would take the
aoniiuation, aud through UDforseen
' and unexpected circumstances be
came the head of the nation and a
j moat able and popular president, the
importance of filling the place with
an able and carelul man has; become
more prom.iinced. It has dawned
upon the public mind that only a
: man who Is of the best mental caliber,
and one pre-eminently fitted for the
first place should be selected and
that no re-actlouery or unworthy man
with an unsavory record should be
cliOEen.
In keeping with this idea many
capable men have ofiered. or at least
placed themselves in the hands of
their friends, with a view to accept
ing the vice-presidential nomination
If tendered thorn.
It Is said that upwards of fifty
prominent democrats were willing to
to be the running matenf Mr. Bryan,
tbe choice of which fell upon Mr.
Kern of Indiana.
It may be said of the present vice
presidential candidates tlut neither
have occupied a commanding posi
tion in national affairs, although
Sherman undoubtedly was the better
known of the twain. Inasmuch as
both of the present presidential can
candidates are strong, virile young
men. in ratural order of things in
this life either should live to till the
presidential term of four years, and
even longer it possibly may not mat
ter as to the man occupying the sec
ond place.
In the event of the uuforsoen hap
pening, however, only strong, cap
able and honorable men should be
called to the otlice of vice-president.

It baa placed over $500,000 worth in

brokers aud financiers who are long
on the market and anxious to hedge

of Hryan's election. In other words
at the 10 per cent rate, the policy
