"Mr. Cake's defeat was do directly
to the votes of Republicans opposed to
Statement No. 1, who voted for Mr.
Chamberlain expressly for the pur
pose of passing It np to the Legisla
ture, where tbey hoped to get a result
mora satisfactory to them than tbe
election of either Cake or Chamber-
The above is from the Oregon la o of
tbe 4th, and the editor declares It to
be a fact, from 'inside knowledge',
gained before tbe election. Thus we
have the anomalous situation of a re
publican legislature, of a strongly re
publican state, pledged to elect a
most partisan democrat to the United
States Senate by the deliberate pur
pose and act of republican voters, not
for tbe purpose of electing the demo
crat, hut, to compel the legislature to
commit at leant, moral perjury, by
electing a man not of the choice of
tbe voters of either party.
There Is but one remedy for the
condition that confronts us. In the
future, stand by the laws we have,
vote your party ticket, and urge
others to do ao. Tbe people will tnus
win in tbe end.
Tbe people know very well tbey
cannot elect a United States Senator,
nor direct tbe Legislature whom to
elect But, tbey claim the right to
advise tbe Legislature of tbelr wishes
In this, as they may In any other
work of legislation, and we believe
tbey will force a recognition of this
right to suggest, though they cannot
by Statement No. 1, nor by any otber
means, destroy tbe legal power of tbe
Legislature to elect whom tbey will.
Vote your party ticket, and victory
Is sure. We told voters throughout
tbe campaign, tbe old bosses wanted
them to tangle things up in this very
way, for the put pose of discrediting
the primary law, and restoring tbem
selves to power. Unfortunately, we
did not have the active assistance of
tbe Oregonian. We supported Ful
ton for tbe nomlnaton.

Buy Hair
at Auction?
At any rate, you seem to be
getting rid of it on auction-sale
principles: "going, going,
g-o-n-e I " Stop the auction
with Ayer's Hair Vigor. It
certainly checks falling hair;
no mistake about this. It acts
as a regular medicine; makes
the scalp healthy. Then you
must have healthy hair, for
It's nature's way.
