Giant Radishes.
The aukurajimu, or Japanese rad
ish, is as formidable as its name. In
shajic and foliage the trnkurajima re
sembles our long American radish.
There the similarity ends. In Ja
pan thc-e vegetables grow to a
weight of thirty pounds. The flavor
of the Fakurajima is similar to that
of our own rudUh, but is more deli
cate. The flesh is far superior to
that of the native product, being
like an apple in color and texture.
The sakurajima can be sliced and
keeps well. A single small radish
will Ik sufficient to furnish a meal
for an average family. The partic
ular advantage of tliix product is in
the fact that it may be eaten at any
time after the vegetable has proper
ly formed until it has fully matured.

Mushrooms.
A singular and very interesting
and useful institution has lx'cn es
tablished in the little city of Tarare,
near Lyon, France. It is a myco
logicul bureau, where expert judg
ment is furnished concerning mush
rooms brought to it for examina
tion. The country round Tarare
abounds with mushrooms, many of
which are poisonous. Since the es
tablishment of the bureau nobody
buys mushrooms which do not car
ry its ticket of identification and
guarantee, and all the country peo
ple from miles around bring their
mushrooms for examination. One
surprising result has been the dis
covery of scores of excellent edible
mushrooms which before nobody
dared to touch.
