Hawley Making flood
That Congressman W. C Hawley is
the sort of man Oregon needs iu
cod crew la evidenced by the following
from a Washington eorreepondent to
the Oregouian:
"Representative Hawley, of Oregon,
ia "making good." He has shown
during his brief career in Congress
that be is made of the right kind of
tuff. If the people of his district
have the good eense to return him
term after term, they will find at the
, end of a few years that they have oue
of the strongest Representatives from
the entire West.
Though uutrained iu a legislative
career, Mr. Hawley is rapidly learning
the ropes in Va-biugtou, and Is lay
ing a sound foundation for a success
ful congressional career. He did not
come to Washington with a reputation
be was not known a a humorist ; he
was not heralded as a "boy orator
or '-'boy wonder": he was not adver
tised aa a freak of any sort He was
just a plain new congressman, to be
judged by his actual worth. He made
i to pretenses; .he claimed no honor."
The article pays other high tribute
to our representative which is appre-
1 ciated all over the state. Mr. Hawley
regrets very much that he ha- been
called away to Oregon to register, but
owing to an oversight in the primary
bur, he must do so in order to be a
caudidate for re-election. Mr. Haw
ley haa not misled a day iu congress,
always tn hand, no mutter how dry
nd nninterbPtiuC the sessiou of that
bodv. This is the course all great J
men have pursued in congress. By
so doiug tbey are ab e to stize any
opportuiuty that ruiutt arise at au
unexpected time anJenable tberu to
secure favorable action ou local
legislation. Mr. Ilawleyis the makinjj
of oue of tbe greatest congressmen
