DECEHBER !. Local Option and Liquor. --The Oregonian dea'.a wisely and deep ly with the Uquor question; going more deeply Into the matter we be lieve, than anyone yet dealing with It, even the anti-liquor people them selves, f'or they bave only taken up one side of the question, aud ieft many things unsaid that might tbrow . -.n tha anhiArt. and much to t ho dissatisfaction of the advocates of the j traffic The Oregonian starU with tDe revenue derived by the government from government revene license paid by the manufacturers, which amounts to $150,0000,000 a year, and on oowo the line through states, counties, and Incorporated cities and town, where i millions are expended for retail 11 . cense. These revenues play an im portant part in feeding the govern nent, and without them, the money wonld have to be derived from taxa tion. The Oregonian states that the the operation ot government would not be lei expensive, and that the official system would not be cot down. We can hardly agree with The Orego nian that the expense of governmen t would be as great as it is now, tboogb the official system remain as it is, for the reason that, conoeding that the consumption of liquor la responsible for a large portion of our criminal oases, the jury and wltneaa fees in these criminal cases represent a con siderable portion of the expense of the trials, and are paid out of the county's funds, and not borne by those funds ' set aside for the payment of salaries. It is plain to be seen by the Orego nian 'a article that it does not favor absolute prohibition, but is willing for local option to work out its salva tion io the small communities. It is our belief that, having the lo cal option law, as we bave it, if radi calism, on both sines will be cut out, and the law allowed to take its natu ral course, aod liquor dealers will obey the law. wherever a town is fouod in forcing the laws and the saloons abid ing by them, local option will n ot at tempt to d'sturb the conditions there, v but will hunt out the localities where the abuse of the license system has embittered the publio against the traffic, and there will set to work, having the sentiment of a law abiJing publio to back it. We notice that In the Eastern states, where the whole salers have become fearful of the spread of the prohibition wave that is making inroads on the trade, the wholesalers are refusing to sell to saloons that do not comply with the laws forced upon the statute books by prohibitionists as moderate measures. 1 1U LUIS I LI C J t A J'l k lu legislation, aud they are combined in their efforts The Oregonian says in part as fol lows: COFFEE !
