Monday was the last day for paying the 1000 taxes before the same became delinquent. Most of the taxes were paid, ao that there will be but very little property that will have to be old for taxes. Hampton was among those who made a grand rush for the land office, and says be would have been No. 1, had he not got lost in the mountains, and after riding several miles arrived at the spot from where he started. Jim Woods has leased the shingle mill from bis brother Kd. and will commence at once to make shingles, while Kd. will devote hit time to farming. Daly, Surveyor-Osneral for Oregon, was found dead at the foot of the stairway in the entrance to the Kelllng-Hlrsob building in Portland, at 4 o'clock on the morning of Oct 4. His skull was fractured, and at first it waa thought he had fallen down the stair. Close investigation resulted in a different opiuion as to the cause of death. No reason could be assigned to his being in that building at that hour in the morning, and the murd er theory waa advanced Daly was state Senator from Benton county three terms, and four years ago waa appointed to the potitlon of U. 8. Surveyor General for Oregon by President Roosevelat, to succeed Henry Meldrum, who was convicted, of land fraud. Mi.
