ORBOON, flAY . 997 5aloons Must Reform. A remarkable editorial in Bonfort's Wine and Spirit circular (New York) warns the saloon that it most reform or go, for the pe pie are becoming disgusted with it's evils in politics. The recent prohibition victory in Knoxville, Kentucky, Is thought to be due to a revulsion of feeling against the saloon rule of city politics rather than to the conversion of the voters to total abstinence: and it is the con viction of this weighty organ of the liquor trade that if t is saloon business throughout the country does not mend its ways, it "will be prohibited in all places save the business or tenderloin precincts of our large cities." So serious is the situation, indeed, that last June the National Wholesale Li quor Dealers' Association issued an appeal for the purification of the sa loon, and a few weeks ago the Ken tucky Distillers Association appointed a commission of five to consider the advisability of calling a National con vention to frame a license law that can be presented to the state legisla ture instead of the "radical and in practicable legislation" now being creed, and often successfully, by the anti-saloon league. The following nArACTanhs are ouoted from the Wine I o and Spirit Circular: With more than one-half of the geographical limits of this great coun try under laws prohibiting alcoholic beverages; with Tennessee passing through its legislature a bill that al most amounts o state prohibition of the manufacture and sale of wines and spirits to a vote of the people: with Texas providing that express compan ies transporting wines and spirits hall take out a 5,000 license; with the Illinois legislature considering a county unit local option measure and Indiana a f 1,000 license for the few saloons the Remonstrance law will leave in the state; with almost a dry state and facing probably a legislative session that will submit a prohibitory amendment ; and with an organization opposing us and bworn to our destruc tion that seems to lack nothing in the way of money or brains, enthusiasm, or persisting, untiring work what, may we ask, is the wine and spirit trade doing to arrest the current of events or to alter in any way the rad ical conclusions which are being forc ed upon the people in every state, county and precinct? "If there is one thing that seems settled beyond question it is that the retail liquor trade of this country i must either mend its ways materially J or be prohibited in all places save tbe business or tenderloin precincts of our large cities. "If the Anti-saloon League can James M. Curry, of Lakeview, coun maintain its present organization it i ty of Lake, state of Oregon, Sworn looks as if it will certainly destroy the legalize 1 saloon in all of tbe Southern states, excepting, perhaps, in Missouri, and it is certainly mak ing strong headway in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and other Western and Northern states. "Far from sneering at the Anti saloon League, the Wine and Spirit Circular pays its respects thus: "The Anti saloon League is not a mob of long haired fanatics, as some of the writers and speakers connected with our business have declared, but it is a strongly central organization, officered by men of unusual ability, financier ed by capitalists with very long pur ees, suscribed by hundreds of thous and of men , women and children who are solicited by their various interests, advised by well-paid attorneys of great ability, it is working with defi nite ideas to guide it in every state, ia every county, in every city and in every precinct. iff, 0 NEW PINK QJimmZ, OREf Under Entirely New Hanagement Having recently purchased the hotel from Mr. McDonald, I earnestly solicit a share of public patronage. My, aim shall be to please. GEORGIA STICKEL, Proprietor. "If the Anti-saloon League Is de feated at any point it Imuediatly pre pares for another attack along new lines, and when It succeeds it at once begins work for more telling victory. "Precinct local option, with the Anti-saloon League, la but the fore runner of county local option, and this again la merely Intended as a step, ing-stone to state prohibition. There la no question that this organ ization has well prepared plans for controlling the legislative branch of the government at Washington, and of passing a patloual prohibitory law at some time in the future, but before it undertakes so glgantio an enter prise it is working to cripple the trade in every possible way, and while we sleep it is succeeding in the most substantial manuer." Evidence has been produced to the grand jury investigating the graft cases in San Francisco to show that each police official had bis price for letting the dives operate in violation of the law. The prices ranged from fo a week for policemen to (100 a week for the chief, the captains receiving ioO . In nearly all cases the officials called at tbe house of ill-fame to col lect their own share of the graft, not beine willing to trust others of the graft gang to collect for them. The labor organizations that had such a staunch friend in President Roose velt, are learning that the "big stick" hangs over their beads when tfaey step beyond the limits of toleration and seek sympathy for murderers and de baucbers of legislatures in tbe inter est of labor organizations. President Roosevelt has proven himself equally severe on labor and capitalists when they get out of the bounds of reason aud justice. Judge Loving of Virginia, the other day sought Theodore Eastes, a promi nent young man ot his city who had, the night before, taken tbe judge's daughter out for a ride and brought her home in a drugged and uncon cious conditiou, and turned a double barreled shot gun loose on tbe young man, killing him instantly. Judge Loving surrendered himself to the au thorities and was released on bail. Some people have little confidence in trial juries. Tbe verdict of the Hermann jury will add to the list, and when Scbmitz and Roof are cleared by a jury the number will be further increased. It is stated that L. D. Hicks, who gained wide notoriety some months ago by being rescued from a cave-in mine after being entombed for fifteen days, is going insane at Reno. Hermann told tbem all tbe time that he was not guilty. TIMBKK L.4XI OTlt K. UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE' LAKVIEW, OREGON, March 15, 1907.
