Tbe cafes and hotels of New York are rivaling each other In the almost oriental splendor with which Jhey have fitted up Biuull rooms for dinner and after theater parties. At one cafe near Broadway the sides of one of these rooms are composed entirely of mir rors, after the French fashion, while the celling Is covered with green leaves and grapes, bunches of pink and purple grapes of glass, within which lire elec tric lights. The effect Is that of a beau tiful arbor. Anotln-r cafe has mirrors reflecting small red lights throughout the room, while the ceiling, ulso of mirrors. Is au exquisite Imitation of moonlight, the effect of which Is ob tained by electrics Inclosed In globes of tbe color and sheen of moonlight seen through a delicate tracery of faint Ijreen leaves. Exchange. A Sad Case. A Chicago physician was one day called to attend a sick child In a "shabby genteel" quarter of the Windy City. "Madam," said the doctor to the mother, "you should send this child Into the country for several weeks each summer." "I am sorry to say, doctor," respond ed the woman, "that we are not rich enough to do that." "Then," suggested the physician, "have her sent by the fresh air fund." "Oh, doctor," exclaimed the woman, "we are not poor enough!" Harper's Weekly. Too Salfuh. Cltlrnan What's the matter with all you Bwamplfurst fellows? You dou't aeern to like my friend Itncklotz. Naw Yorir. THE SPANISH ESCURIAL It la a Marvelous Specimen of Ancient Architecture. The F.scuiial. the palace of the Span- i lh king, an architectural marvel, for- J merly described as the eighth wonder j of the world." Is now seldom spoken j of even by those w ho are ready to go I wild over much less pretentious struc tures. The cornerstone of this "Span ish St. Peter s" was laid by rhlllp II. In 153, but It was .'$02 years (ISIS) be fore the monstrous building was pro nounced finished. It was built by Phil ip In fulfillment of a vow to "erect the finest monastery In tho world" should his forces be successful In their great battle with the French. That battle was fought at St. Queutln on Aug. 10, 1557, St. iJiwreuce day, and In order to honor that saint us well as to fulfill his vow the king had the foundation of his great memorial luld off In tho shape of a gridiron, the Implement of torture upon which the goodly Law rence Is reputed to have suffered mar tyrdom. To those who have never visited the Escurlal the size of the gigantic struc ture is beyond comprehension. It Is 740 feet from north to south and 680V4 feet from east to west, the square tow era at each corner rising to a height of over 200 feet. Within this monstrous building are tho king's palace, a cathe dral, a monastery of 200 cells, two col leges, three chapter houses, three li brary buildings, five large balls, six dormitories, three hospitals and over 3.000 other rooms. In order to make St. Lawrence's gridiron complete, the building Is built In quadrangular form, with seventeen rows or ranges of mon strous stone structures crossing each other at right angles, these forming the gridiron's ribs, the handle being a wing 470 feet In leugth. Tho church, which is a part of this vast pile of ma sonry. Is 301 feet long, 2.'W feet wide, with a dome 330 feet In height. It la estimated that the building cost $50, 000,000. A Question. "My wife thinks she will never find a better cook than the ono we now have." "Humph! TJh er say, what would you call your wife, a pessimist or an optimist?" Clevelnud Press.
