Massingill and Ay res returned from

and report fairly good headway being
made on development work on some of
the claims. There are between 25 and
30 prospectors there from different
places, most all strangers, who ate liv

some thorough prospecting. It is sin
cerely hoped that these mines will.
prove eqnal to the statements sent out
concerning them. The prospects are
aid to be good, and some fine speci

taken from a number of the claims,
and everyone hopes that development
of the claims will establish absolute
confidence iu the district aud furnish
a basis for safe investment.
The experiance of Multnomah
county aught to be a valuable lesson
to Ihe other counties of the
state in buying up lands
for taxes at tax sales. ine
statutes provides that counties
may buy up lauds at tax sales, but
mnst not hfl a competitive bidder for
the lands, aud deeds issued for such
property must 6how on their face that
no other bid was offered for the par
ticular piece of property. It is esti
mated that the deeds for 1.000,000
worth of property bought by Multno
mah county for taxes are void because
the fact that the county was not a
competitive bidder was not stated on
the face of the deed.
