UKEOU, JAN. 24 lw7 Klamath and Crook counties have bold mass meetiugs for the purpose of drawing up a remonstrance against the county division scheme. Lake county should do likewise. Legisla tors are usually reasonable men, and if they know the people of the entire district are opposed to such a scheme, they are not likely to support it- Take 400.000 acies of assessable land and the personal property thereon away from Lake county, and it will be felt by the remaining taxpayers. - Our tax levT at the present time is based on a property valuation of 2,280 990, take away one fourth of this and in order to raise sufficient funds to run the county, a levy one fourth greater would have to be made, which would bring the levy up to 20 mills again. We had kicks over high taxes for several years, and now that we have a reduction, it stands the people in band to protest against any such scheme as Mr. A. M. Drake and J. M. Lawrence have hatched to boom their own little town. Both these men are said to be very shrewd and claim to have secretly "fixed" the Portland delegation, and made the way easy for the creation of their new county be fore they ever let the secret leak out. The Bend Bulletin undertakes to bamboo2le tne residents selected as victims of the county division scheme, which was batched in the privacy of its editor's sanctum sanctorum, by soft-soaping them in a touching edito rial, in which his pen is fed by tears of gratefulness at the peoples liberal ity in allowing Bend to be named as the seat of the proposed new county. He promises them reward for their "common sense judgment," and says that "this broad minded action on the part of its neighbors will be repaid in similar liberality and fair mindedness when the time comes five years hence, for the selection of a permanent county seat." The proposition to create the new county of Deschutes was kept a secret from the entire district affected until the bill wan proposed in the legislature. This fact alone aught to arouse the ispeclon of the members of the legis lature and cause them to oppose it un til it was known that the measure was agreeable to residents of the district. Every newspaper in th throe coun ties interested in the proposal county division is kicking high about it, ex cept that oue at Bend, where the seat of the new county is to be located, owned (town and papei lotb) by J. M. Lawrence and A. M. Drake, the pro moters of the scheme. Bend is said to le a real pretty lit tle hamlet on the I winks of the IV si'hutes way up iu Crook county ten days ride from here and it is further stated that if I.ake and Klamath counties will donate liberally iu laud and property that little hamlet may grow to importance. As a reward for the liberality of Lake and Klumath counties iu do nating valuable agricultural and tim ber lands aud property tow art! the booming of Bend Mr. A. M. Drake and J. M. Lawrence, proprietors. ill promise to represent us in all fu ture legislatures. Are the people of Lake county ready to donate 4X),000 acres of vauable ag ricultural and timber land, with all its improvements and personal pro perty, toward the booming of Bend, way up in CrooK county at the foot of the enow clad Cascades., Prineville had a cold snap last week; the thermometer registered 20 below zero, and only for the warmth created in that vicinity over the re cently sprung county division ques tion, many would bave suffered. J.M. Lawrence, receiver of the Land office at Rosehurg, is at Salem lobby-1 stone's ing for the new county. If Mr. Roose-j personal Influence nnd the fear of an A rr Flap to I. It la. Wind and weather were to Mrs, Ooodsall a constant source of Interest. She watched the clouds and the village weather vanes with eagerness and pleasure, and In doubtful weather her first question to the grocer's boy when he came to take or deliver orders was ure to he, "Which way was the meet ing house vane p'lnted when you came by?" Her , neighbors all humored her by telllrg of any eccentricity they had dis covered In their own or other vanes, and Mrs. Goodsall would speak of "ed dies" and "currents" and "swoops' of air In a wise and authoritative manner. "How did you enjoy your visit to Boston?" asked one of her neighbors on Mrs. Goodsall's return from a week's sojourn with a niece who lived In the city. "I suppose you saw lots of grand sights. I hear Carrie lives In considerable style." "She lives In a benighted locality. said Mrs. Goodsall dryly. "That's what I call It. For all their carriages an' stone stops an' fine clothes 'tis a be nighted spot. Feer an twist as I could, there was only one weather vane I could sight from their windows, hack or front What kind of a place do you call that for Intelligent folks to make a homo, I'd like to know ?"- Youth's Com panion. Fwaetlon of the Ilooae of Lord a. The antiquated constitution of the bouse of lords and Its comparative neglect of Its dntles Irritate modern reformers both theoretical and practi cal and bave led them often' to call for Its overthrow. But at the bottom of this charge of obsoleteness and Ineffi ciency Is the fear that the peers may take It Into their heads to be energetic and Industrious, constant In attend ance and active in operation. If they were so If the lords chose to Ih as rigorous as they were In ltS9 or 17S2 or even In 1S07 and lK32-the demo cratic element In the United Kingdom would bave had hard work to complete the change which It hns cnrrled so far and longs to carry further. What the lords ma do now was shown by (Ilad- horae rule bill. There is about as much need fur the county of Deschutes as there is for a battleship on the Chewaucan Marsh. It is authoritatively stated that har dly a single man outside of Bend is in favor of the new county. Bend will be applying for a pension after tbe battle. The Drake family, of Bend, are out for about half the offices fcr the new county. Its a pity Mr. Lawrence can't be borne so that he could get au office, too, but probably he is figuring cu a part of the swag. Lake county people should feel very grateful toward Governor Chamberlain for tbe interest he has manifested in securing just taxation for this couuty t . k. 1 . Irish revolt, ad!ed to no small amount of serious conviction, forced the bill through the commons. The lords met In numbers scarcely known for a life time. The case was put on both sides with great force and with that serious. lofty, high bred eloqueuce that has nev-1 er become extinct In the upper house during many ceuturles. The bill was rejected by nn immense majority, ami the friends of the measure had the sat isfaction of knowing that the verdict of England was against them and with the peers, nnd not a few voices raised the cry which Is heard at steadily re curring Intervals.
