The Lake County Examiner ia now in ita twenty eighth year, and has never nlseed an issue, nor failed to seize every oppor tunity to improve. Every new idea In newspaper work is carefully studied, and if it appears that the paper can be made better by their adoption, there ia a way found to add the improve ment The Browing circulation has long since made necessary the install ation of a power press, and sue year ago we installed a typesetting machine to facilitate the news service. The advertising has constantly increased and together withgthe greatly increased circulation and the large amount of job work turned out of the office. provides for the additional expense of -operating and putting in new machine rj. The publisher feels proud of the suc cess of The Examiner, bat does not attribute it wholly to his own efforts to enhance the valne of the paper to the pubiio. Due credit is given patronizing pubiio for sufficient sup port to keep it on a paying basis, which permits it to advance in the -world along with the other prosperous institutions of the county. We are also proud that we have been able to maintain independence for the paper, which allows us to publish the news just as we see it, show no special fa vors to any one who was not justly entitled to the same, speak out plain ly on all subjects, political and other wise. It ia the policy of The Examin -er not to unjustly criticize the ac tlons, nor ameliorate the offenses of ' any one. We do not pretend to Bay that The Examiner has at all times said the things which would best please the - most concerned, but we say that right and justice has at all times directed ita course in such matters, for which we are not ashamed nor afraid. If we have made an enemy of any person in the past year through misrepresent ing any fact or through inadvertently neglecting the interests of such per son, we are very sorry, but, on the other band , if we have incurred the enmity of any person by speaking the troth, we do not feel that the loss is worth a tear. We wish to heartily thank our pa trons, and hope for a continuance of their patronage, and wish one and all -a Happy New Year, and unrestricted prosperity throughout 1907. TS NorcroM Expose. eiation of being permitted to select 87,000 acres in a compact body the compny surrendered 111,000 acres in lteu thereof. After this settlement was reached Senator Pulton was asked to present the bill, as prepared by the Secretary of the Interior and the laud attorneys to congress, which he did, after, however, consulting the Secretary of the Intel lor as to bis approval of the measure The act was passed, and placed it entirely at the option of the Secretary of the Interior permitt ing exchange, (the final deal was made a short time ago, so we understand). Thus Senator Fulton was relieved of any responsibility. TUN Term League. Regardless of tho repeated refusals of Mr Roosevelt to consider a third term as president, what is termed the "Third Term National League," has been organized in Chicago by Edward A. Horner, formerly of Leadvlle, Col orado, who says he Is a "red hot Dem ocrat driven to the verge of bankrupt cy by the machinations of the 'system. In his organizing address Mr. Horner said: President Roosevelt is the people's choio, irrespective of party, and de manding bis nomination in 1908. "We intend to have a member in every county of every state in the Union." The state chairman will be sounded on the matter and their co operation w ill be sought, but this is a peoples' movement, not a politicians' movement. It is true the President has said he would not run again, but we take the position that if the peo ple need him and insist that he serve another term he cannot refuse." Raffles Unlawful. The grand jury of Modoc county re ported last week on the various mat tera under investigation by that body Among the other things the grand jury reported that three cases of con ductng lottereis, more commonly knowu as raffles, has been brougth to the notice of the jury, and in two of them the offenders had come before the body aud plead ignorant of the law in the premises. The casea referr ed to were the disposal of team of horses by C. W, Walton by raffle, a gold watch by II. 11. Putnam and ! a pistol by E. J. Wake. The report says: "Particular atteuton is called to these as they seem to have been con ducted with the sole Idea of profit on the part of those conducting them. The plea of ignorance of the law will certainly have greater weight if back ed up by an offer to return the money taken; promislug reform and pocket ing the receipts go not do well togeth er." Two circumstances played co-iocidentally about this action. One was the near approach of New Years, when resolutions are in order, and many flock to the water wagon, and the othe, ia that the members of the department had read the story told in light vein" of the over precautious fire Chief who directed that th de partmental officials Inspect the hose and aparatus two days before every fire. With over a million immigrants coming annually to the United States the President has decided that the time for drastic immigration legisla tion has arrived aud it is announced that boon after the ho'iday recess of Congress an executive message will be sent in outlining the legislation which it is advisable to enact. Perhaps none will suffer more than newspaper men from the effect of the Hepburn anti-pass law, which went into effect Tuesday, January 1 1907. The newspapers have received notice of cancellation of all existing contracts for advertising for which the publish ers received transportation as pay, The law provides that nothing but Cash shall be received by the railroads for tickets, thus depriving the press from paying for rides in its own wares. flM . me result wiu te that most news paper men will get to stay at borne. A reform crusade is on in Portland. A man who owned and conducted a notorious den in what is known as the "north end, "was compelled to close his joint some weeks ago, and not sl owed to re-ope n, and he is seekin g revenge on all inmates of immoral houses by inaugurating a crusae'd in the city's tenderloin disrict. A sweeping order baa been made by the Secretary of the Interior sus pending the issuance of patent under any form of entry until such entry shall be investigated and examied by a special agent of the general land office. Senator Fulton has the promise of recommendation of an amendment to the bill repealing the timber and stone act, providing that 20 percent, of all sales of timber lands go to the county in which the timber is located.
