Probably no Invention for road Im provement has been talked about and wrltteu about as much as the Kins road drag, and It has aroused great Interest anion the farmer through out the country. In the following artlolo from Farming will be found 1 some new and Interesting fscts about this method of Improving country hlgl ways at small cost: Ten years bj-o a Missouri farmer who tun! grown tlred.of wading througl a "slough of desond" every sprln when the roads were soft, and who ha seen his neighbors lose time, mono and patience when their wagons wore hub deep In the mire or their horse tugging and straining la their harm to get a hnlf load to market, declde that there must lie some remedy foi this condition. One day In thinking It ovei he made the astonishing discovery mm wuat mane me roads muddy was mini, and that If the road was workci luto such a dtiupo ttiat the water woul drain off Instead of soaking luto the ground after every rain the rond would cease to lo muddy. r. 1 a . lie rigger up a nomemado cou trivniu-e out of sn old wooden pump stock that the frost had spoiled and an oak post. Ht men na of three pieces of fence board he ualled these togethet S3 that they were held parallel to each other. Then ho made a rough plank platform on which to stand and by means of wire hitched his team to this clumsy affair at such a point that II would drag along over the road with a slant of about forty-five degrees, He began with the road that ran In front of bis own farm. When It was at its worst he drove up and down from his own front gate to thst of his nearest neighbor. Like a huge mason's trowel smoothing off mortar. It scrap ed along, cutting down the Inequalities and rough places and filling up ths wagou ruts. He kept at It, and, after a number of dragglsgs, In plsce of the fist basin that had served as a water course for every storm to settle In, tu bed built up a rosd with a crown and surface thst wss smooth enough to shed water "like a duck's back." Id TWO PHOTOORAPHS, BHOWIMO A SO AD bB FOBS AND APTSR BUMU DBAOOKU. short, he simply demonstrated tht soundness of his msjor premise, "If 1 can get rid of the mud te rouds will cease to be muddy." The device ht made he called a "split log road drag.' The man who had by such simple means worsed such wonders with hit road Is I. Ward King of UalUand Mo. Even after having perfected the roue drag the reason that It worked t lilt wonder was not entirely clear to It Inventor until be received Inspiration from observing a bog wallow. He says "One day I noticed that water wa standing In one of these wullows lout, after the ground all about It had be come dry. I'robably I hud many tlmef before observed this fact, but not unti now had It occurred to me to liu-uln Into Its cause. Examining the eJos oi the wallow, I was Impressed with tin fact that It was almost as hard us 11 piece of earthenware. Clearly this wa because the wallowing of the hogs h'U' mixed or 'puddled' the earth and tin water together, forming a kind of ce ment which dried Into a hard and practically waterproof surface." The cost of making and operating this drag Is so small and the Idea th.it Is embodied In It Is so simple thst tbo wonder of It Is that Its application has not already become universal. Roads can be worked up Into an excel lent condition and maintained at a cost of from $3 to 10 a mile. The dragging accomplishes a number ol useful things. Tbo most Important one Is that by giving It a smooth surfact and a rounding shape it mokes It pos slble for the road to shed water In stead of absorbing It. Then, too, II kills the weeds and takes out tht bumps at the sides of the culverts. It also destroys the old trail and thu prevents deep ruts being formed. Tht time to use the drag and the mannei of Its use an Importunt. Until a road has been worked Into some sort ol shape the first dragging should bt done when It Is very wet or when It li thawed on top during the early spring. After that the time to drag Is aftsr I rainstorm or wet spell when It beglni to dry out. I I.. . 1 sttarnry at l.a nmcr-ifeij' Buiiiim. I. I. 1 KM..
