"Tlie vIlliiKe nt present Is alwut i. .If
ori;an!7."l. Clean strefts nnd a'.:
are maintained by the su'isldiary so
cieties, there beln? a peneral commit
tee as well. In the same way we h ive
a committee on vacant lots and p.T-fc-ways.
Property owners who ne .' -ct
their vacant lots are reqnested to re n
dy the unsightly conditions, and ofri
plera are persuaded to attend to park-,
ways In front of their resiliences.
"Another committee looks after treer
and parks. Onk I'ark Is proud of Ita
trees. and the committee sees that
steps are taken ts protect them cither
against the blight -they were threaten
ed with it last year or against tele
phone or telegraph companies that
would Injure them with wires.
"A sentiment In favor of the estnfr
bbhment of small parks la growing in
the village. Whether we will obtain
these by gift of public spirited men or
will organize a park system I do not
j know. Our committee ts helping to
j define public opinion on this point, and:
prompt action la likely to result.
"We formed a committee- at onr laaf
meeting on 'ordinances and their en
forcement.' Our committee on amoka
complalned that It was hard to get ac
tion. It reported violations of the or
dinance, bnt steps were not taken to
ren.edy the matter. This new commit-U-e
la composed of lawyers.
"Oak I'ark la exceptionally well pav
ed as the result of the last few years'
Improvements, many of them carried
out at the behest of the association.
The property owners have been heavily
taxed to achieve this. The streeta are
asphalted In some Instances and mac
adamized in others. Many miles of ce
ment sidewalks have been laid. The
alleys are the only thoroughfares that
need particular attention. We cannot
reasonably agitate having them paved
at present, but we hope eventually to
aee that done.
"We are at present working on the Im
provement of our garbage and ashes
removal We also are looking into the
matter of clearing many of our vacant
lots which grow thistles and weeds.
We really need a thistle commlsssioner
In Oak I'ark.
"The Improvement association ha
the support of the entire village. Prop
erty owners are well disposed to It,
and as our district Is mainly occupied
by homes every one recognizes the ne
cessity of preventing any section be
coming run down or disreputable.
"At our last meeting the question of
making Oak Park a prohibition district
came up. Our lawyers submitted an
opinion, the substance of which was
that existing laws virtually constituted
our village a prohibition district, and
o license cannot bo Issued without n
majority vote on referendum.
"We believe that Oak Park compares
favorably with any other suburb of
Chicago. The good condition of our
streets strikes any visitor, and we have
brought our young people into the im
provement association so that they do
not throw papers about.
"A new association called the Par
ents' and Teachers' association is form
ing for the purpose of looking after the
schools, a matter of vital Interest ta
our members.
"We have a committee on railroad!
rights of way which usually occupies
Itself with the general condition of the
rights of way, but now Is watching to .
the interest of the village the projected
track elevation.
"Among other things done by the as
sociation is the organizing of special
sections, the merchants on a particular
street, for Instance, that are neglecting
their locality. For the purpose of en
couraging the public generally a synop
sis of the principal ordinances will
be distributed this season."
The Oak Park Improvement associa
tion has been in exlsteace about five- -years.
Its secretary and treasurer Is
Charles Woodard.
Improving; School Grounds.
"Our school grounds and church lot
are, as a general thing, bare and un
attractive," says Eben E. Rexford ia
the Outing Magazine. "They ought
not to be so. They need not be so after
a little effort If the Neighborhood Im
provement society takes them In band. .
Trees and surubs properly arranged'
will make attractive placed of them..
Flowers will give them a grace and
beauty that will appeal to every oner
Interested nnd arouse lu them a desire' ,
to do still more in tho way of Improve
ment. That Is Que of the beauties of
an orjjanlr.ntion for neighborhood bet
termeut. it grows by what It doeav
and the more It does the more It want
to do."
