One prominent advertiser Illustrates the principle of adver tising In this way: Tke moner expended (or advertising Is the ah me aa If placed at Interest. The proflta front the advertlnlaa; are Tlrtaallr the Intereat on tho lnTeatmaat. "The sums spent for advertising are properly chargeable to cap ital account because the result ing good will la something that has value, which, if the adver tising has been properly done, can usually be sold for the face valne of the Investment "The rate of Interest Is deter mined by the skill with which the Investment is made. "Just as the quickest way to increase invested wealth is by compounding the interest, just so the quickest way to realize re sults from advertising is to com pound the returns." The method mod in obtaining funda to build "subscript lou roads" In Iloone county, Mo., were descrllHHl a few daya ! ngo by W. It, Caulhorn, an engineer In Columbia who helped and who dlreetra tho building of some of tho Quest high-1 1 ways In that pnrt of Missouri, aaya the ' Kansas City Star. "1 don't think Amer icans like tho toll Idea," Mr. Cauthorn ' aald, "especially when they art pay-! Ing tnxrs too. The subscription road J Is more popular than the toll road. In preparing to build the Coluiuhla-Met-Ico free highway the promoters start ed with nothing except co n fl denes. They were laughed at, but they aald, 'Let us build one mile aud you'll want twenty.' And that was true. The county court subscrllied half the amount needed. The property owners adjaeont to the first mllo put up the remainder. "That was 4he start. It attracted others living farther nway, and they offered to subscrllie for a tulle, so that the first contributors were given two miles of highway for the price of one. Others Joined In, and the work contin ued, the cost to each nutMcrlber being what he paid for one mile, and yet he had the uc of the whole road. It Is to tie extended this summer In the same way until It Is thirteen miles long, all free hUhwny. The highest subscription out sld tluit from the county court was flDil. The sums ranged from $3 to $100. Farmers were allowed to give $." in work. Due man who owned sis ty acres gave JUKI and worked It out. lie said the road addiM 25 per cent to the value of his land." "We've Immmi (muling rock," a farmer said. "Some of us have got plum tired waiting for laws. We're coin,' to build two roads this season, each five miles long, by the subscription plan. They'll be free roads. The county will contrib ute one-half the cost. The more we get of the.' roads the more the farm ers demand tli.:n. I know one mau who gave Jl.WO, and he owns only 300 acres. Pvural Delivery Notes Illinois will probably be given the credit of starting the first rural free mail delivery by automobile. It has been started at Plainficld, Will county, on n twenty-six mile route, covered by II. W. ICitzenihaler. The car that the carrier uses loaks like an open buggy. Tatrons of the rural free delivery routes throughout the country have been notified by the postofllce depart ment that In the future they may pro vide themselves with suitable boxes which ure weather pro-if and fit recep tacles for mail. The patrons of the rural routes will be nllowed the privi lege of making their own boxes or buy ing them from any manufacturer. Since free delivery of mail In rural districts has been established I have been pleased to discover two or three pairs of bluebirds nesting undisturbed In mall boxes by the roadside, says a writer in St. Nicholas. It Is gratifying to know that the birds allowed them selves to be disturbed two or three times a day and yet not abandon their nesls. lut the thing that gives the bird lover the greatest delight Is the fact that uo one robbed the nests. The eHtnhllHhmc.it of tho rural free delivery service in Minnesota Is tend ing to bring about a better condition of the country roads traversed by the carriers lu a way that Is unexpected. Carriers Alfred Johnson oud. Frank Watts, who have routes 3 and 4 I hat run out of Mankato, report that the farmers along those routes have Im proved tho roadways by the use of 1 drags. It is expected that the fanners on oilier routes will follow tho ex ample sot. K. L.
