A Magazine Without a Name j I A nameless weekly baa Just made Its apiK-arance In Shu Francisco. In- ieai or a nea.uine u .m-, .,ueBl,uu mark. The editors have lift the eel- ection of a name for this new Journal iatlc venture to their renders. Tt-y offer a prise of f 100 to any reader of the first four Issues who may suggest a name or title that will le declared the most appropriate by four dis interested Judges. This offer, so the editors declare, has no string to It. Competitors are not required to sub Mr ibc, or to euter any obligations whatever. All they have to do Is to end iu their suggestion of one name (or a hundred names If they like) for theuamelesH magazine, to the Orient Publishing Company of San Fran cisco. The names of the Judges who have undertaken to select the most appropriate name from all the titles that may be Hubmitted. are In them selves a sufficient guarantee of a fair and honent coutest. The are four of tbe bent kuown Journalists of the Pacific Coat, to wit; Earnest Simpson, managing editor of the San Francisco Call." Fred erick Moore of the"Examiner," Artr ur Dunne, city editor of the San Fran cisco "Bulletin" aud James Tyler of the editorial staff of the San Fran cisco '"Chronicle.,, Their division is to be made by a simple majority vote at tbe expiration of the first four weeks of the new weekly, beginning with October 2d. Though the new magazine is yet nameless its first number Is by no means lacking in Individuality or strong original features. It is an Illustrated weekly of standard size, modelled apparently after such ex cellent prototypes as the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's weekly The colored cover design by Rea Irving, as well as other black and white work, excepting the reproduct ions from photographs, are origin ally contributed drawings by well known artists of the Pacifl Coast. The leading article, as might be ex pected from a San Francisco Maga zine, is on the present situation in the stricken city at tbe Golden Uate. It Is from the pen of Col. Edwin Emerson, whose descriptions of San Francisco since the earthquake have been attracting such wide attention in tbe East and in Europe. "Through a White Man's Country In tbe Philippines," by Hamilton Wright, gives a graphic description of the proposed trancontinental Phil ippines Railway, from tbe pen of that well known authority on Philippine affairs. The fir6t installment of a romance, "The Empress of Corcavado." by John Fleming Wilson, and " Victor iano Lorenzo," the first of a series of Central A merican cbaracte sketches by Lieut. Arthur Dutton, both have as their locale the only remaining laud of romance aud adventure left to writers since Rudyard Kipling came out of the East with his won derfully colored stories of India. Iu addition to these aud other con tributions therein a dramatic depart ment aud two solid pages .evoted to the material progress and develop-! mt-nt of the Pacific (Mast. The nameless weekly is a notable addition to western journalism and judging from the contents of its first number may be depended on to make an honorable name for itsself. The better clas of citizens of New York would no doubt hail with delight tho proposition to seat Theodore Roosevelt as United States Senator from New York, and he would be an adjunct to the good government wing of tbe U. S. Senate, but the whole United States feel that this man's val uable service could be more equally distributed if Mr. Roosevelt were sent to Panama to finish his job there, which when commenced, was consider ed the greatest achievment of modern times. It has lost none of its impor tance, and Mr. Roosevelt should see to its finish. The city of Ban Francisco 1 over run with thugs and thieves to such an extent that business men of the city have organized and armed themselves to protect their money and property. The police force t either inefficient jor incompetent to cope with the eitu I at ion. Holdups arc becoming more frequent and there aeema to be such a email per cent of convlctioua that the chances they run in being captured . and convicted is very small. Some- timea as many as Ave or six holdups occur in a day, and in brond daylight on the crowded streets and stores. No man is safe if he has in bis charge i money or jewelry to the value of a dob I lar or two. and womeu are robbed of thpir pnrswa oa tho tm,t evcryday. tn , .,, police never happen to be iu reach and tbe holdup mau invariably escapes aud is never caught. Such a state of affairs is almost enough to drive the business men of a city to tike arbitrary action. j The Klamath county papers announce numerous cases of robbery and steal-. ing. There seems to le a general ep- j idemio of this kiud all over the west. ' The better the times and the easier it is to secure work at good wages, the more stealing there seems to be. There is no doubt of the fact that if the authorities would do their part and make some examples this sort of bus , iness would not be so flourishing. ; The way to do it is to elect the right ; k'-nd of men to office. j Tbe president wtll soon issue a pro clamation withdrawing from entry all public lands supposed to contain coal la under ' i Meantime an investigation way by the geological survey to deter-! mine the real character of the lands to I be withdrawn, and such as are found not to contain coal deposits will be promptly restored to public entry.
