XearW every i.i.U for over a week
there has be. u oruiikeu Indians prow
linn about tht strtets. It is pretty
certain that the lndiaus get whiskey
from the China.ueu, hut no evidence
can be produced to prove it, and Mr
Indian cannot be made to tell, and the
task of getting to the bottom of the
matter is a difficult rue. Extrarrdi
nary methods might be employed
which would show up the culprit. It
will go on, no doubt, until some night
one of these dmu ken Indians w ill com
mit a terrible crime.
There was 140 timber land filings in
the Lakeview land district duiing the
month of September, the local laud
officials have been crowded w ith work,
and besides a large amount of official
business the office has been overrun
with inquiries about lands in this dis
trict. Thousands of people write to
the land office for information, think
ing, no doubt, that they are the ouly
onewho have writleu, and in many
cases complain because they do not re
ceive an answer by return mail.
Hill Back of New Road
In eastern lailroad circles the Idaho,
Montana & Caliomia railroad, whica
is now about ready to begin construc
tion, is said to be a Hill project set
on foot to evade Harriman ten itory
in California and the Southwest. It
is reported that the surveys are prac
tically complete, and that grading w ill
begin in a few days, says the Journal.
The company has opened an office
at Caldwell, Idaho, which place has
raised a bonus of flO.OOO. Secretary
E. E. Springer is quoted as saying the
route has been surveyed and contracts
will be let at once for grading. It is
expected to have the line completed
from its Montana terminus to Winue-
mucca by the end of 1907. Addition
al color has been given the rumor of
Hill interest in the road by the fact
that Xrthern Pacific surveying par
ties were at work on the final survey
from the Snake River to tfinnemucca.
Close observers btlieve they see a
family resemblance between this rail-j same as in my advertisement in this i
road project affd the Deschutes River f paper, and triangle so rs to cover up
