In a rocj-rit attack orKri the patent medicitie business, it was im pl "d that woinrn ar lim victims of patent medicine B'lvertihfr, iwcnusw tlicy are so mucii morn gullilile lhau men. Well, perhaps they are more ea.;iy foolel, hut we dotibt if Mrs. Ciiiidwiek, if she were a-ked her opin ion, w-fiiild suv so. As a matter of fat 1, women with their wonderful intui tions are apt to m pretty rikkI judges of what is so arid what is not so. 1 or this reason, women sre not likely to be long imposed upon by misrepre sentations concerning patent medicines or anything else, and when n patent medicine business has stemlily grown for thirty-fight years it necesarily means that it has won the confidence of the women as well as of the men who have been .and are its grateful patrons. Such a business as that da scribed here is conducted by Dr. Kay V. Pierce of Buffalo, whose name is a synonym for honesty and honor in the' business and professional world. Ir. Pierce has a great establishment in buffalo, w hich is one of the chief points of interest to visitors in that city. It consists of a large laboratory for the manufacture of the medicinesi which bear his name and a hospital in con nection therewith for the treatment of various eilments. This hospital is taxed to its full capacity at all times by patients who corne "from all parta of the country for treatment by the large staff of graduated specialists. In the laboratory the famous Dr. Pierce remedies are 'compounded from pure roots, herbs and barks of known prop erties and for special purposes. The charge was recently made that alcohol was the principal ingredient of these medicines. Tha journal which made that baseless charge was promptly sued for "JOO,000 damages. An immediate retraction was the result. Dr. Pierce is not only or.e of the principal manufacturers of patent medicines in the world but be is also one of the largest advertisers. He knows that the essence of deal ing with the public is to let the public know that vou have something which it wants, which it needs. But Dr. Pierce a'f Vrows that truth and honor must be the basis of all business and he permits no misrepresentations in any dtt ment of bis business, not even in the advertising. Thousands of men and women have found the truth of this statement in their dealings with Dr. Pierce, a large part of whose busi ness is conducted by correspondence. The charge has been made that this feature of the patent medicine business is a fake, as well as other features, that letters from patients do not receive at tention from physicians, that they ace made the subject of flippant comment by clerka who read them and prescribe remedies. This charge is absolutely untrue eo far as Dr. Pierce's business is concerned. He employs a large num ber of highly trained physicians and surgeons for this work and they give quite aa careful attention to all cases coming to them as does the private practitioner. All letters are treated with tbe utmost confidence and are not subject to miscellaneous inspection. Tbe proprietary remedies are not prer Bcribed for all patients, but prescrip tions are given just as any doctor would give ttmn. " Aud the names and ad dresses of patients are not sold to others for sending out circulars. In Bhort, Dr. Pierce's business ia what it is because Dr. Pierce has al ways done just what he advertises to do and because his medicines are just what they are advertised to be. Every Ijindoirner Should Help Brum tlfjr the IliKtiviaym. Attention should not be couflued to the traveled roadway to the total neg lect of the roadside, says the Auto Ad vocate. The importance of beautifying the uuused margins of the road allow ance Is a matter which should be Im pressed upon every landowner. How ever good the road, it does not fully 6erve Its purpose If the roadside ia a tangled mass of weeds, brush, rubbish aud tin cans. A farm usually par takes of the condition of the road lead ing to It. aud the state of the roadside Is apt to be uu Index to character of the laruier. l:ural England owes much of Its be;iuty uot ouly to its good roads, but also 10 the well kept roadsides, the ma.suiawnt trees aud beautiful hedges. It is u power that creates a love of country and an uufalterlus patriotism. ' Grade unJ level the roadside as well as the road. Establish a good sod. Keep down the weeds. Let the fences be neat aud tasteful. Plant groups of trees uud shrubbery. Utilize any eprinprs available near the road to make drlnklu.,' places for borsea and cattle, lu doing all this preserve na ture at her best, making the most of natural advantages. The roadsides cannot, need not, be converted Into lawns, but they need not be the unsightly emblems of chaos that we so frequently find them. Ia building our rouds the 'original beauty of nature Is destroyed, and we owe it to ourselves to make such atonement as we can by restoring a certain amount of order aud ornament lload Improvement For Poor Towns. The bo:'.rd of supervisors of Sullivan county. X. Y., are urging an amend ment of the stuto higUway law by which towns of less than $1,000,000 vahu'.tlju will receive from the state nn rmount of money for highway Im provement etuinl to the amount raised lu the town l!i-i'e;id of CO per cent, as uudiT llie present law. This, It Is claimed, would help th poorer tow a to Impi'jve their ruadu without unduly burdeulug them. ! I
