Those who are trying to cultivate pretty lawns will be interested to know that a liberal application of gas oline to dandelions, plantains and other weeds will effectually kill them and will not injure the grass near them. The weed should be first cut off, and then pour the gasoline on the stump with a small oil can. The agri cultural expeiiment station reports this is the best method of destruction they have found, after trying many other substances. Burns Times Her ald. (Why not pull the doggoned things up?) S. A. D. Puter, whose career the past few years has gained for him con siderable notoriety, and whose most sensational stunt was recorded in Bos ton when he escaped from Secret Ser vice Agent Burns while holding his captor at bay with a cocked revolver was re-captured iu Alemeda some days ago, while euroute to the Hawaiian Islands under an assumed name. Puter is now locked behind prison bars and his liberty depends upon vigilance of the government's agents who have been running the "muck rake" in Oregon the past two years. The following notice was found posted on a deserted homestead in the arid regions of Kansas: "Four miles from a neighbor, 10 miles from a post office, 120 miles from a railroad, 14 miles from a 6fhool house, 41 miles from a church, 180 miles to timber, 3000 miles to a democrat, half a mile to hell and the same distance from a republican. Gone to Oregon God's country to get a fresh start.'' Ex. The Interior Department is asking residents of Lake county to give up existance in the interests of the gov ernment irrigation project in Klam ath county, by submitting to the crea tion of a fore.st reserve covering a con siderable portion of this county that the water supply may bo preserved for the particular section the government is going to irrigate. Here is one of the squibs that are going the rounds of the country press. A young widow being asked why she did not marry again replied: "I'm just as good as married now I've got a parrot and he does the swearing ; I've got a hog that does the grunting; I've got a torn cat that 6tays out all night. If that is not as good as the average husband I'll quit." We have not heard any reason offer ed, by any Republican voter iu Lake county, uhy any one of the candida tes of his party should not be elected. Binger Hermann's trial tor the des truction ol certain letter tiles in Washington is to be held in June. Buttermilk Candidate. (Oivgouian. ) Jonathan Jiourne, Jr., Republican nominee for Uuited States Senator, is a great lover of buttermilk. Iu fact, his fondness for this byproduct of the butter industry is so great that he makes his uoou hour meal upon but termilk and cream. Every afternoon he goes to a local creamery, usually in company with a friend, and gets a glass of "half and half" half butter milk uiv.l half cream. Alter chatting a few minutes, he repeats the drink and goes back to his headquarters ready for the afternoon's work. Mr. Bourne says buttermilk and cream can't bo surpassed, and those who have tried the beverage with him gen erally agree with his opinion. It Is a well known fact that Mr. Bourne is a total abstainer and has not tasted in 1 toxlcatlng liquors of any kind since lie was married, 10 years ago. 1 ! I s TO THU VOTERS OF LAKE COUNTY: Having I toon regularly nominated as the candidate of the Republican Party for the otllce of Sheriff of Itke connty.I now ask the voter of this County to cnrefnlly consider whether I nin worthy of their support or not. If you shall see fit to elect me your Sheriff for the next two years, I promise yon, upon my honor as a mau, that I will give strict attention to the duties of tle Sheriff's office and Iw the Sheriff of no faction, -but will perform its duties without fear or favor, and give the people an honest, ctllcieut and economical administration.
