Allnrt Pclt, Kepublicnn Nominee for Sheriff. Cue of the reutest legislative buttle in the history of the National Con-1 gTess huts been won ly the superior i statesmanship, ami diplomacy of IVes- Ident Koosevclt, in the enactment. by the Senate, of au acceptable luul road Kate bill ulong the Hues nwiii mended by him in his last annual nietnnage to Congress. President Roosevelt has not only won a signal victory in securing the passage of the rate bill, but by his superior geueral ship, he has united the waring fac tious of the Republicans in the Senate and also iu the house of Representa tives into a harmonious body, who will act iu unison iu the passage of this law, upon which every Republican can point to with pride as a party measure. Those who have kept iu touch with the parlimeutary tactics of the railroad Senators to defeat the earnest eudeav ors of the Preisdent for legislative relief from the grouping railroad com binations of the country, can readily uuderstraud that it Ix'came necessary to invite the Democratic Senators to help to secure au acceptable rate bill, but Senators liailey, Tillman, and other Democratic leaders, instead of accepting the invitation iu good faith, tried to manufacture political capital out of the situation, hut the presideut could not be caught in such a demo cratic trap, so he put on his lighting armor , brushed the Demcorats aside, including the great orator and consti tutional lawyer, Joe liailey, made the rate bill a party measure and united the Republican Senators to a man in its support. This triumph of President Roosevelt is one of the greatest victories of his remurkably successful career. Lakeview Public School. Every citizen of Lakeview should feel a laudable pride in the great de velopment and material growth of the public schools of Lakeview during the past two or three years. The school year juHt ended has been thee most successful in the entire history of the school. A very large class completed the common Bchool course and receiv ed diplomas, while in the high school work, large clashes received instruc tions in the ninth , tenth and eleventh grades. The work iu the high school has Iweu followed a laid down by the re quirements of the State Hoard of Edu cation, and when one realizes that the most advanced of the liest high schools in Oregon have but twelve grades in in the curriculum of study, a betterap preciation can le had of the splendid work being done ly the public schools of Lakeeview. CH ARLE5 V. GALLOWAY Yamhill County. The politicians of the state are up agaiiiint the real thing iu the new primary law. They must acknowl edge that the political machinery is bulked if the voters regard party lines and vote their ticket. It will prove conclusively to the voters thut they cau nominate the ticket and elect it without the aid of the crookedness thut lias heretofore U-en too often pra cticed iu the state. The only hope politicians cling to is that the voters will not stand l y the ticket they have nominated, thus side tracking the new primary law uud robbing it of its good effect. First we had "the man with the Loe," then came "the man with the bit; stick, "uud from the man with the big stick came tbe "the man with the muckrake." next will probably lie tbe dunghill. i jaiag DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE Representative In Congreat.
