that? Well, well, my dear sir, don't
iook so (icprcsxcil. We can do little j
more until nct Saturday, iii-d In the'
meantime 1 may make one or two In
quiries myself."
Next morning he hail a note from
Minn Smith recounting shortly and ac
curately the very Incidents which I
bad seen, but the pilh or the letter lay ,
in the postscript : ;
"I am sure that you will respect my '
confidence, Mr. Holmes, when I teil
you that my place here has become dif
ficult owing to the fact that my em
ployer has proposed marriage to me. 1
am convinced that his feelings are
most deep and most honorable. At the
name time my promise In of course
given. lie took my refusal very serl
ously, but also very gently. You can
understand, however, that the situation
Is a little strained."
"Our young friend seems to be get
ting Into dvi'p waters," said Holmes
thoughtfully as be finished the letter.
"The case certainly presents more fea
tures of Interest and more possibility
of development than I bad originally
thought. I should be none the worse
for a quiet, peaceful day In the coun
try, and I am inclined to run down this
afternoon and test one or two theories
which I have formed."
Holmes' quiet day in the country bad
a singular termination, for he arrived
at linker street late In the evening with
a cut lip and a discolored lump upon
bis forehead, besides a general air of
dissipation which would have made bis
own person the fitting object of a Scot
land Yard Investigation. He was Im
mensely tickled by bis own adventures
and laughed heartily as be recounted
tbem.
"I get so little active exercise that it
Is always a treat," said be. "You are
aware that I have some proficiency In
the good old British sport of boxing.
Occasionally It Is of service; today, for
example, I should have come to very
Ignominious grief without It."
I begged bhn to tell me what hud oc
curred. "I found that country pub which I
had already recommended to your no
tice, and there I made my discreet In
quiries. I was In the bar, and a garru
lous landlord was giving me all that I
wanted. Williamson Is a white bearded
man, and he lives alone with a small
staff of servants at the hall. There Is
some rumor that be Is or has been a
clergyman, but one or two Incidents of
bis short residence at the hall struck
me us peculiarly uneccleslastlcal. 1
have already made some Inquiries nt a
clerlcul agency, and they tell me that
there was a man of that name In or
dera whose career has been a Blngf.1
lurly dark one.
"The landlord further Informed r.m
that there are usually week end vis
itors 'u warm lot, sir' at the ball,
and especially one gentleman with a
red mustache, Mr. Woodley by name,
who was always there. We bud got
as far as this when who should walk in
but the gentleman himself, who bad
beeu drinking his beer in the taproom
and bad heard the whole conversation.
Who was 1 7 What did 1 waut? What
did 1 mean by asking questions? He
bad il line flow of language, aud bin
adjectives were very vigorous. He
ended u string of abuse by a vicious
buck bander, which I failed to eutlrely
avoid. The next tew minutes were de
licious. It was u straight left against
a slogging rutlian. 1 emerged as you
see me. Mr. Woodley went home iu u
carl. So ended my couutry trip, and
It must be confessed that, however en
joyable, my day ou the Surrey border
has not beeu much more profitable
than your own."
The Thursday brought us another let
ter from our client.
"You will not bo surprised, Mr.
Holmes," said she, "to bear that I am
leaving Mr. Currulhers' employment.
Fveu tbo blgb pay cauuot reeouclle me

Saturday I como up to town, and I do
not Intend to return. Mr. Carruthers
lias got a trap, nnd bo tho dangers of
tho louely road, If there ever wero ouy
dangers, are now over.
"As to tbo apoclul cause of my lcav
lug It is not merely tho strained situa
tion with Mr. Carruthers, but it Is tlio
renppearauco of that odious man, Mr.
Woodley. Ho was always hideous, but
he looks more awful tbau ever now,
for be appears to have had an acci
dent, and be Is much disfigured. I saw
him out of the window, but I am glad
to say I did not meet blm. Ho bad a
long talk with Mr Carruthers. who
aeeiuod much excited afterward. 'Wood

yet I caught o glimpse of blm again
