FEB. .!. Justice Walti. The Inaugural address of the Gov ernor of New Jersey coutaluB some announcements not only startling but astounding. After announcing that the ordinary reelepta of the state treasury for the fiscal year had been nearly $3,000,000, the governor congratulated the people upon the fact that, "of the eutire income of government, not apemiy was paid directly ly the people," and that nearly 78 per cent of it "came from railroads and other business com panies, domiciled in the State." He,re is something for study. We cannot be expected to believe, that corporations "domiciled" in New Jersey, are contributing 7s psr cent of the public ivveiiihf. t.i that slate Kim ply for the privilege of keeping olluis there, without some corres ponding belielit. Tiiey oiuimiled in other states, do nearly ail ineir busi ness in other states, uu! tiave, in most instances, every ventage of their property in other Stales except mere otlice fixtures. Of course there is sometniug false, unjust and rotten at the bottom of this. These eople, deriving their corporate existence from New Jersey, and lieing "domiciled" there, are lie youd the reach of legal process from other states, where their business is all doue, most of it lu open defiance of the laws of the states in which such business is transacted. We believe iu tin iinal taiumph of right, and do not doubt that the day will come when government iu New .Jersey will be supported as it is iu other states, and not by contribu tions from creatures of its own laws, which thrive by methods of business t.Uat would not be tolerated by other communities one moment, were they in the jurisdiction of theircourts. These "railroads and other business com panies are simply sheltered iu New Jersey to escape their real obliga- j i . i ii.jun iu oilier communities, while they grow rich by extortion and plunder. The billiou dollar steel trust which so injuriously collapsed years ago is an example of this. provement and building highways. In every stute this movement Is lu evidence, and tlmt which is the most striking feature of It all Is. that those communities known to have done most In this direction already. and to be ahead of others In this re- Hjiect an' most urgent of all In their demands for lieeter and permanently good roads. Do the people of Lake county care nothing for all this? Delinquent Tax List. NOTICi: IS IIKKKHY lilVKN Kansas Is about to offer John I). Rockefeller battle. The Senate of that state, Hitting: In committee of the whole, lias recommended the passage of the bill creating a State Oil Kenuery. This la a lilt of fol ly that will not even excite the con tempt of the Standard Oil. Kansas cannot sell oil for less than it costs. The great corporation Ignores cost. To destroy competition In which It never falls, it ignores cost. Then to comp.il the same people to make good, it disregards cost. Kansas Is beaten before she fights. (irowth, is the motto of this age. Shall Lake county not catch a little of the spirit? Hetter education, is the basis of all progress. Shall Lake county be content with su.'li means of advancement as are thrust upon u.-.' The world is growing away from u! A high-school would be a very small step iu the way of pro gress. When shall we start? There are now about twelve chil dren of Lake county parents, attend ing schools in other parts of the state. The annual outlay of money on this account, every dollar of which is lost to Lake county, cannot lie less than $ir), for each, or a total of $1,S00; u, handsome sum; almost sufiicient to build and furnish ahigh scliool building, and keep the money at home. George Compere an eutomoligistof western Australia; thinks he has the parasite that feeds upon the larvie of the codling moth. This is inter esting If true. This pest has cost the fruit growers of the country Immense sums of money, and, up to this time the battle against it has not lieeu In any degree sucsessful. Governors of Stales, legislatures and many commercial bodies have spoken, from all parts of the coun try, most heartily approving the policy of the I'resident, in ileum inline that Congress shall enact a law es tablishing government supervision of railroad freight rates. Our faith in the correctness of this policy and the certainty of its adoption, increas. es with every hour that we give to the study of It. t s,;lear, that the profits of all business, and therefore of all industrial enterprises, depend largely upon the costs of transporta tion. 1 1 is equally well known that the railroads, acting in harmony with the trust, and iu utter disre. gard of the rights of in.livi,i,,i small shippers, have aided greatly to destroy that healthy competion in trade, everywhere admitted to be essential to general prosperity. The government cun bo trusted to do justice to all classes of Its citizens. We shall never believe that equal justice will bo done In uny other way, because It has not been done. The world refuses to wait on Lake county, iu educational progress. California has raised the State School levy from $7 to $9 per census child. Are we willing to pay half that much to make a start towards a High School for the better education of our own children? The Homestead Steel and Wire Company have advanced the price on all their products 1 per ton. This has lieen done in consequence' of a greatly increased demand, iudicat ihg a growing activity in the build ing trades throughout the country, giving unmistakable evidence of prosperity. The newspapers contain rumors that Ilussla Is giviug hiuts of her readiness to accept peace, and some facts are given which seem significant.
