The order of the United States
Government removing duty charges
from all Imports for the Lewis and
Clark Exposition has now gone Into
effect. While exhibitors from foreign
countries will be .permitted to Im
port their wares duty free, the strict
est regulations will be enforced to
see that the order Is not taken ad
vantage of by smugglers.
Ninety per cent of cigarette smok
ers who present themselves for en
listment in the army are rejected.
A youth too weak for army service
will not make great headway at
anything else as the years go by and
ho keeps tin smoking the seduclve
cigarettes. Hoys who have ambi
tion to amount to anything should
not touch the poisoned things.

Hoc. 21. says: Fred M. West, presi
dent of the Stockton Savings und
Lou u Society Hank of this city, and
a director In the Western Pacific
Hail way, stated to an Associated
I'lt'ss representative to-day that theJ
construction of the line will begin in
this vicinity at once. Mr. West said:
"1 have Just returned from San
Francisco, where I had a conference
with Pavid F. Walker, a wealthy
banker mid one of the Salt -Lake
director.' He stated that he was
well satisfied with t he progress that
was being made, and that the work
of construction would begin from
meiito and other points iu this State
immediately. Work Is already being
prosecuted lu the Beekwlth Pas.
President W. J. Hartnett Is on the
way from New York, and will be in
Stockton the latter part of this
week lu connection with the begin
ning of operations here. The con
tract for the entire construction
work of the line has been let to one
