The to ninendtnenta to the State j constitution, the Local Option Law ami the Hired Primary nomiiiiittii were questions that were freely di- cumm-1 throimh the press .lurinsi the campaign. The Knminer favored the IHroct Primary law. which was rallied in Lake county ly I'titi major ity, liut owing to the false front the Local Option law appeared to U wearing, this pajn-r, while making no right against it. did not advtH-ate It. Itehind the Local Option pnuw front was firmly w ritten "Prohibi tion. " which canuot carry in Oregou uxunaaked. It Is the opinion of The Examiner that tdiould the Local option become n law In this state it will cause till sorts of controversies. It Is well enough for the people In rural districts to en force prohibition If their majority prefer It, but for a community. In w.orkiug out their salvation, to pro hibit the sole of liquor in towns seems handy justice to the town whose Imputation is not preat enough to overcome the rural vote, yet at the Ame time, the jteople nre not oppos ed tothesaleof liquor in towns where city goverunn lit regulate its distribu tion in a meet and equitable manner. Many stntes in the Union have tried . .. ... prohibition and finally, lue other exieriments have discarded It and went back to the more conservative laws. Eolution of Heroism. Some time ugo the disjtatche.s an itiniiieed that a Japanese shell ex ploded in General Stoessel's yard at ; I'ort Arthur and broke a rooster's I'g. The Stockton Mail observed that "the rooster would live In his tory with the mule of Matanzas." The Idea was not copyrighted, and therefore that paper cannot object to the following elaboration of it by Ambrose Pierce: "When the cen turies have effected their deadly work, resolving history Into fable, this immortal bird will t-tand forth -n his one leg to preserve and glorify the memory of modem war. Pro- longing our vision down the I'.im Utas of the f'Jtun- we behold him scratching tq.iin the grave of the i-.nde of Matanzas." "We niodestb 1 ie to ask, however, how a one-l-ggvd rooster can scratch." Ex. Man, mule or rooster could hardly t xperiertfe such an evolution of his- t ry without having bis "leg pulled," 1 and we suggest that the rooster t.ive his stump pulled to sufficient V'Hgth '.. stand on.
