Is jour name In the list of tax payers lnildished in The Kxa miner this week? If not it should be. Xo man In l.akc county lias h ri.sht to lie poor unless misfortune overtakes him. There is no place in the world where any man. hli;h or low, with or without education, has a better opportunity to buihl up iv small fortune. The rvsou nvs of this county Is the stock industry. Thne niul again young men have started with nothing but their hands to work with, and at the end of 5 or years, nold out and left the county or gone into other business with from $ UX to SMMI. The list ot taxpayers in Iake county who pay on less than ?liMM) is greater than those who pay over that amount. There is a re ward for those who are willing to work and know how to save. Paine Humor is now circulating a j report in Alturas that another news-! paper or two were 'to lie started j there. Oh. well there is nothing else much to talk about this winter weather, and the rumor may reach Lakeview Ufore spring. Well, there is plenty of room the Lord knows, for two more paper at Alturas. and they should le started at once. And, while they're ut It, just estab lish one at New Pine Creek, one or two more In Lakeview, and another one at Paisley, and by that time the rumor may get over to liidwell and Warner valley. Ex-Governor (Jeer has become head of the editorial department of the Salem Statesman. Although without experience In journalism as a profession, it Is said he is a ready and prolific writer and possesses fine ability and good qualifications to be an editor. A decided Improvement Is noticed In the Statesman's make up from the 1st to the editorial page, and from the editorial to the last page. Umatilla County paien report that the rabbit canuery, recently established at Echo, Oregon, will pack fruit during thesummer season. This is a "rarebit" of news, ami while it may le alright, yet some people may object to canned plums or cherries witli hair on. A Futurity Colt Race. The social season In Lakeview was opened when Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Sherlock gave a whist party at their home Tuesday night. Thirty guests wore present to enjoy the evening, j and a most pleasant time was their! j verdict. A small Christinas tree stood In j o'ie corner of the parlor, while the walls were artistically decorated) 1th festoons of oelgivoti. Mis tie- toe hung front theclectiic chandelier, j also a spray of the same hung in the j doorway leading to thediiilngroom. i Heautliui white waxlike chrysanthe. j mums tilled large vases on the centre: table. j During the games, oggnog was J served, and at the end of the tenth game prizes wen' given for the lest j and poorest playing. Mrs. A. M. Xeilon was awarded the ladies prUoi for l st plaving. and W. It. Snider, I i the prize for gentlemen. Mrs. W. A. Massingill claimed the I by prize for holies, while the booby score for gentlemen was a tie letwcon Mr. Hobinson and Dr. Daly. A single! cut of the cards decided that Mr. Hobinson whs the poorest player. Large heart-shaped luolto cards with coriesponding numbers, red for ladies and blue for gentlemen, were pinned on the guests for luncheon. About this time the mistletoe gan to work and the old ami young, marri.'d and unmarried, performed the ancient custom, which sounded like a band of horses walking through a mud hole. This amuse ment together with the repartee of Mr. lieall, made this part of the evening one to be reineinliercd. Much curiosity and anxiety upon the part of tbe ladies to find who would Ikj their partner for luncheon, was amusing to the gentlemen. The guests were seated around the tables daintily filled with delicacies for which the hostess is noted. A com motion at one of the tables was dis covered to le a lady rushing over to the County Judge and presenting him with a well-alined smack as a reward for In-lng seated beneath a tell-tale sprig of mistletoe. The so cial editor of The Examiner, pale and wan, luckily never come under the mistletoe ban, for had he la-en the recipient of such osculation as was given Mr. Watson, this entertain ment would not have been reported. Unfortunately Mr. Sherlock had In-en called away from home and was not present during the evening, but Mrs. Sherlock did honors as host and hostess admirably. Following were the guests present: Messrs. and Mesdames (Jeo. II. Xlck erson, W. A. Massing!!, Ioe Ileal!, C. II. Dunlap, A. ISieber, W. H. Sni der. A. Y. Heath, S. II. Chandler and J. E. Xorin; Mrs. H. H. Dunlap, Mrs. A. M. Neilon, Mrs. C Vlnyard, Mrs. C. A. Knox, Mrs. II. C. Whit worth; the Misses Xickerson, Snider, and Sands, and the Messrs. J. X. Watson, Dr. 15. Duly, Jack Hobinson. F. H. Evans, and Geo. Harrow. v Our Store Policy The Chief Study of This Store Is to satisfy It customers, Our stocks are always lej t complete with thoroughly reliable merchandise.
