Rubber From Sage Brush. Some years ajjo Thomas Edison, while in this country, remarked that God never made anything in nature that was not of use, and he believed that the vast tracts of sagebrush in Nevada would some day lie turned to a great coniinercial value. In this connection the following dispatch from Denver in of Interest. It is taken from the New York Times: The first carload of "Actinella IMchardsonl," an unsightly sage brush which covers thousands of acres of mountainous country In Soutnern Colorado, was delivered todaj' to the Western Rubber Com pany recently incorporated, and which expects to revolutionize the rubber Industry. It was discovered not long ago that the supposed useless "rabbit brush" which covers the mountains at an altitude of 7000 to 1KMX) feet, contained 25 per cent commercial rubler. A prosjector lost In the hills first discovered the rubler substance by chewing the root to sustain life. His discovery was brought to the knowledge of Chicago chemists, and the Western liubls-r Company was the result. , A dozen men are now engaged on the hills about Salida, collecting the brush of which millions of tons are in sight. Rubber that has stood all the tests of the tropical product has been manufactured on a small scale und the organizers of the Western Rnbber Company announce tlmtj they are prepared to Install a large1 factory. Theie Is a good deal of meat in the j above and If their experiment is sue- Francisco last Thursday when ccHsful, It means the Inauguration of big rubber enterprises in Nevada. We have enough material here to make rubber for the world. Rubber is increasing in value of late from the great scarcity of the article. Sagebrush alo produces tho best tannin oil in the world and the two manufacturing enterprises could easily Imj combined. Oregon Dally Journal, a Democratic dally newspaper, eight to 20 pagon, 4 a year; 'i tor nix months. The Journal U a newspaper. Bend in your Mubucriptlon. Interest your neighbor In The Journal. AdditBu The Journal, llox 12X, Portland Or. Stock Notes. Kxpreni. Caleb T. Oliver, of Merrill, ami C. O. Stanton, of Iowa, wen in tho city Tuesday. Mr. Stanton recently do live rod a carload of blooded horses to Mr. Oliver, who will deal more extensively than ever In the raising of blooded st)ck. The horses are now in Montague, but will Is in Klamath Falls during the holidays for the insiection of all admirers of fine stock. Mr. Oliver has U-en suc cessful in stock raising, and desorv ingly so, for he is of the county's enterprising clrlzens. He Is intonat ed In tlx? county's progress and wel fare. He has lieen awarded more pn'miums for exhibits at the county fairs than any other exhibitor. S. L. Aiken, cattle buyer for the Western Meat Co., of San Francisco, started 400 head of lwef cattle for the railroad this week. They were selected from the Howard band of 2.VXI head he purchased last fall and which Is Inlng wintered here. Mr. Aiken is the largest purchaser of cattle that visits this section. He covers territory from Texas to Mon tana and westward, and at the present time Is feeding 10,000 head of cattle In Nevada, when; alfalfa is jM-rfcetlon and where It Is properly fed. The alfalfa grown here, he says, is far superior to the Shasta valley product and probably equals that of Nevada, which he will 1m; able to determine when those who handle it acquire the proper mode of feeding. Klamath Is an Ideal section for feed yards, Mr. Aiken said, and is so destined for the livestock of all the contiguous country for many miles around, it being easily accessible to railroad facilities. New Era.) Frank Caldwell returned from San he had been for about a mouth. Mr. Caldwell took down about 200 head of beef about a month ago and laid them killed on commission. Hesays some of the steers brought him over 7 cents while some of the poorest cows brought about '! cents. Geo. Williams and wife were here from the Likely corporation last Thursday. Geopge says the residents of Likely are fixed pretty well for winter. The corporation has ship ped altogether about I'M head of steers to Mason Valley, Nov., where they will Iks fed this winter.
