NOV. 5. !(.. The Country Newspaper. (Krum ihr Heston 1'ost.) The weekly country newspaper, as an institution, is by no menus de clining;. If ne may judne by the evidence of the recent newspaper directories, it never flourished so much imnt present. It hasa charac ter of it own. Its place cannot It filled by any metropolitan publica tion. It Is the Intimate friend of its constituents. It has the atmosphere of it locality. Its ancle of vision is that of its community, and this it truly reflects. ISroad questions state, national, international It present. and considers as a part of its work of information; but these are subordinate to its own peculiar j mission. The uprising in the lial- j kaus, the breach in the I'ritish miu-l istry, the scandals of the postal ser- j vice at W'n.shiimton. are dwarfed in 1 actual, present importance by the; washout on the state road or the project inr a new trolly i't umect ion. It is 11 tuples- j tionably a power. And it holds the power and retains this influence be cause of the sturdy honesty of the country editor. The country press in the ideal of indeiiendence. It is, as a rule, unpurchasable and incor ruptible. The country newspaiK-r lias its place from which nothing can dislodge it, no quick delivery of metropolitan dailies, no fai-cinat inr pi. lul inls. Ami we are lad to sit indications of the growth and pros perity of this product and aid of local enterprise and local pride. Undesired Lodgings. Tlie patronage which in time past great princes were ia the habit of bestowing upon men of letters Lad two sides. What the other sidu might well he is illustrated by an anecdote of Voltaire. In the early days of his literary efforts the regent of France vm much displeased by the tone of Vol taire's remarks about public affairs and had him locked up in the Bas tille. Iiut later, when his tragedy of "CEdipus" was represented, the prince relented and released the au thor. Happening to meet Voltaire eooa fter, the regent went bo far as to eay: "Be prudent, and I will take care of you' "I am infinitely obliged to you," eaid the poet, "but I beg your nigh ness not to charge yourself further with my lodging." Curious Facts About Eggs. It is rather curious to know just how much pressure an egg will f tand. The following tests, given in a scientific journal, may surprise readers. Kight ordinary hens' eggs were found only to give way under a pressure applied all round of be tween 400 pounds and C75 pounds on the Bquare inch of Burface. !When the tests were applied inter nally to twelve eggs they yielded at pressures of thirty-two pounds to sixty-five pounds per Bquare inch. The pressure required merely to crush the eggs was between forty pounds and seventy-five pounds per quare inch. The average thickness 01 the shells was thirteen-thou-eandthti of an inch.
