Experimenting on Dry Lands.
Hal ph Foster came down from Sum
mer I jtke last Thursday. He has been
on his desert ranch north of Silver Lake
all winter preparing to raise a lot of dry
land hay this year. He will try alfalfa,
rye, Bromus and several other kinds of
dry-land grasses as an experiment, says
the Paisley Post. The ground is warm
and damp there and Kalph says that
seeds planted will sprout and shoot out
in six days. There is no doubt that
experiments in dry-land grasses on the
desert, properly conducted, will result
in successfully adapting the sera-arid
lands of Lake county to some specie of
fodder that will revolutionise thegreater
portion of this county now lying idle for
the want of a profitable method of utilis
ing the great waste desert. There are
four or five ranches near that of Mr
Foster's all of recent acquisition, the
owners of which are unionised in an
effort to make a thorough test of the
productiveness of the soil. The result
of their exeriments should be closely
watched.
