" The I'nited Statea department of agriculture has just reported on a unique and effective method for kill ing the acale insect which are caus ing' so much f!t : met ::n to orange trees in California. The principal inujry is the extraction of the juice, of the tree. At the scale inaect ia a mere pumping machine, it iu eon tinuully abNorbiiifr the sap from the tree. There is likewise a poisoning caused by the irritation excited by the beak of tlie .nsect, or aome liquid injected throug-h the same. It haa now been found that the only aure means of destroying- these peats is by subject inp them to the fumes of hydrocyanic acid pas, com monly designated as "g-assinp." For most specie of scaled insects one food passing-, when done at the ripht season, will almost, if not quite, ex terminate them. The treatment consists in inclos ing a tree at nig-ht with a tent and ii..ing- the latter with the pnisonoiut fumes g-enernteri by treating- refined lioiiiKsiuin cyanide, 11 h ;-r cent, streng-th, with commercial sulphuric acid, (iO per cent., and water. The proportions of the chemicals as now employed in (aliiornia are consider ably in excess of the amounts recom mended a few years since. For small trees ordinary earthen wars vessels are used to g-eiierate the pas. For larger ones, requiring heavy doses, tall wooden pails are employed, two generators being used. The extremely danperous nature of the pas demands that the preatest caution should lie taken to avoid in halinp it by an operator. The treat ment is made at nipht, and the per son handling the chemicals holds up the tent und quickly drops the cyanide into the generator and makes 41 prompt exit. The gassing is often done for cultivators by in dividuals vtln make a rc'ii !-i r Inisi in'.k s ul' it, ,: a a ' a i a l e per tree, 1 1 1 ii i ' i ! 1 1 . ; ' imi M-e, i ., n i:i' from ten cell t s I ' i a dollar i r " i r . A great many people who have been cured of dyspepsia and other diseases of the stom ach and its allied organs of digestion and nutrition bv the use of Dr. Fierce's Golden Medical Discovery say: "We tried many medicines with only temporary benefit. It was not until we began the use of ' Oolden Medical Discovery ' that we found a complete and lasting cure." t It is undoubtedly true that Dr. Pierce Golden Medical Discovery holds the rec ord for the perfect and permanent cure of indigestion and other diseases of the stomach and associated organs of diges tion and nutrition. It is not a palliative. It cures the cause of disease and builds up the body with solid healthy flesh, not flabby fat. It ia with pleasure that I tell you what Dr. TMerce'a Golden Medical Mincovery and ' Pelleta have done for me." writen Mrs. T. M. palmer, of Peede. Kaufman Co., Texas. "Two year ago I wn taken with atomnch and bowel trouble. Everything I ate would put me in distreaa. I lived two weeka on milk and even that gave me pnin. I felt a though I would starve to death. Three doctors attended me one said I had dys pepsia, two aaid catarrh of the stomach and howela. They attended me (one at a time) for one year. I atopped taking their medicine and tried other patrnt medicine ; got no better, and I grew so weak ad nervous my heart would flutter. I could not do any kind of work. Now I can do my house work very well ; am gaining in flrsh and itrengtm, and can eat anything I want." Accept no substitute for Dr. Pierce'i Golden Medical Discovery.
