An incident occurred during the prog ress of the Neilon ce last Wednesday morning which treated some little ex citeuiont. The prosecution endeavored to have the Ux-roll, for 1808 admitted as evidence, when the defense made vigorous objection on the ground that the roll In question bad no warrant or clerk's certificate attached thereto to show it was the legal tax-roll of 1808 for Lake county at any time tho defense examined the roll. This was an inti mation that the prosecution had attach ed the warrant or certificate during the progress of the trial, and to substantiate the charge Messrs. Cogswell, Hell and Hammond went on the witness stand and made oath that the said certificate was tint attached to the roll before the trial opened, and argued that the roll waa not admissible in evidunco. On the side of the prosecution County Clork Gunther and W. A. Wilshire made oath that the certificate was attached to the roll of 181)8 from the time the roll was turned over by Clork Batchelder during bin term of ofllce, jittf fmf 1 f n t n 1 1 1 LOCAL. There were short crops in every locality in the county, and that is the main reason for the present hiiih price of flour in this valley. The same condition prevails in Modoc. Card ot Thanks.
