K. t. Tohry, of Writ Stockhridge, Mam., ha engaged 100 children t nil the order, rejiorU he New Vork World. 'Hi little red-dotted brrtle are being tcooped up In gre.t number. Of all the myriad iuieota in the w .rld thi little redditb beetle ia the iiimt uneful to man. Ita talus ia be yond all price. It ! more cropi the unleene over year after year than any other agent. In whole life I a warfare agalnat other lined that destroy the farm er' iihktance. Kreneh children Wing ago named it bete a bon Dleu (the imect of the good (end), and In Knglikh we he the gentle and affectionate rhyme: "Uadjr (ju. Udjr bu. flr away home " The lady bug i found In every coun try on the globe, although the ajircie in kume liN-ulitiei are more useful than thoke In other locnlitie. It tin a round body only about ine elghta of ait Inch in d.auieter and i uiiobtruiWe both in look ami man ner, ll long tuit it ita appetite. It ia alnay hungry. It feed entirely tiin the egg of other iuaect and iiHin the iuect theniielre if they are mn nil enough to be twilUiwed hy a apeciineo o dtminutiee a the ksdy bug Hielf. Tlie lady bug lay a atring of tiny yellow egga. She U cunning enough alway to lay theae amid a colony of plant lice. Aa aoon aa the larvae hatch out, looking like miniature alli gator, thry begin to eat, and being earnlvorou they fall upon the tiny Ineecta around them. In the five or alz week that they are growing up they deatroy a whole plant-lie aet tleitient. Then thry roll up aa cocoon and hang auapended head downward in nearly any available nook. They came out of the ahell full-grown lady buga and keep on their earnivuroua career. Curioualy enough, the lady bug it self haa few enemies. It only means of defense is a pungent liquid which ia not poiaououa, I not really of a bad odor and probably frighten none of ita haphazard foes. When it ia frightened It drawa ita feet up close under Ita body and aticka tightly to the under aide of a leaf. Treaently, if nothing alarming happens, it spread its small wing and flies away, all the time watching sharply out of its brilliant blurk eyes. The lady bug really has two pairs of wings, although it aeldom get credit for them. The front pair fold over and form part of the hard ahell that incaara ita body. The hind wings are uaed for short flights. Nearly every Inaect which destroy the crops is the prey of the lady bug. Many of these are the lady bug's cousins, such as blister beetles, squash bugs, cabbage bugs, weevils, bark-boring beetle, flour beetles, beat beetles and cotton buga, all of which belong to the coleoptera order. Ths lady bug's greatest service, perhaps, is in the devouring of the deadly aphis. These plant lice, little green Insects no bigger than a tiny pinhead, are the most prolific of in sect. They infest all plants and are particularly Injurioua to cotton crops. Too small and frail to eat the leaves, thry suck out the Juices. Hut the lady bug pounces upon the plant lice. If it were not for this warfare scarcely any small crop or any flowers could be grown. In California a few years ago a particularly large lady bug was in troduced from Australia. It was found to be the only agent which could cope with the aphis which caused the cottony cushion scale on grapes. In two years the work of the lady bug netted a profit of $500,000 to the state. It hua now practically exterminated his special seal insect. A Combination Tree. There ia a curloua combination tree in West Stockbridge, Mass. It i pri marily a maple which measures, a foot from the ground 12 feet 3 inche in circumference. Fifteen feet from the ground there are one or two birch limbs growing and higher up are cur rant and raapherry bukhes, which bear fruit each year. It i not atated whether the augar made from ita tap has a raspberry flavor or the birch bark a currant color and taate orthe berries a apicy tinge of birch. It is very old and bids fair to stand for many years longer, Chicago Chronicle. OF ALL BEERS BREWED None equals our iJohoniian Lncr.
