Vacation is over ami school com menced Monday with Kilt scholars in at tendance the first tlay, wbi'di is about the same as the beginning of last year's term. Alsmt 225 rre expected to attend. There are 10 grades and fill classes in the school. In the 1st primary depart ment, 1st and 2d grades there are 42 pu pils. The 2d primary, 3d and 4th grades, there are 55 pupils. Intermediate de partment, 5th and 0t It grades, 27 puhils. Advanced department, 7th and Hth grades are 115 pupils. High school, ten pupils. The rooms are tastefully decor ated and new and old teachers are tak ing bold of the woik with u vim that promises a good school term. The new books have not yet arrived, but will be assigned when they 'some. Few people i Modoc are aware of the rapid strides being made by the town of New Pine ('reek, up on the Oregon line. A gentleman informs us that there are more than a dozen houses now in course of construction. "Why," said he, "Lake view and Alturas are not in it with New Pine Creek when it comes to improve ments."
