Frank Hill and w ife returned homo
from San Francisco last week. We
understand that Mrs. Hill had a large
cancer removed w hile below, and she is
i.ow greatly improved in health.

Misa Klla Idge a Trinity county girl,
handy with the ride as well as a good
housekeeper, recently killed two big
lions, a male and female, each with a
single shot. The male lion measured 8
feet from tip to tip.

E. W. Follett, the merchant and Nss-
bv of New Pine Creek, ami Chns. Mor

were business visitors in I-akeview last
Saturday. They report their town
building up rapidly.
Mrs. T. II. Sherlock, who has Wen in
San Francisco all winter under the care
of physicians, has so far recovered as to
be able to leave the hospital. This will
lie pleasant news for the lady's many
friends in Lake county.

It is said that civil engineers and their
crews will at once take the field to begin
the surveying for the extension of the
Nevada, California & Oregon Railway.
The work will le speedily finished and
building of the road will begin at once.
Gabriel J. Scott and Miss Ethel Horn
back of Eagleville, Modoc county, were
married at that place March 10th. The
bride is said to be a beautitul and charm
ing young lady, the youngest daughter
of Sir. and Mrs. J. M. Hornback of
Eagleville.

A. Amick and daughter Miss Lura
were visitors from New Pine Creek last
Saturday. Mr. Amick says consider
able farming has been done in the Pine
Creek country this season. The last
snow fall was heavier there than in
lakeview.
Alden Bay ley, who has been delivery
man for E. Lauer & Sons during the
past winter, left here last Monday for
Amedee to accept a position as telegraph
oerator and station-keeper for the N. C.
O. His many friends here wish him

Mr. and Mrs. Cor win Vinyard of
New Pine Creek came up Friday even

day evening. Mrs. Barr has been a
patient sufferer with inflamatory rheu
n atism for some time. She is reported

The proprietors of Hotel Lakeview are
making an improvement that will be
highly appreciated by the public. They
are having a fine gravel crosswalk made
from the Masonic hall to the hotel cor
ner on Water street. Now, if others
will follow in the good work we will
soon have good crosswalks all over town.

cated on Cottonwood Creek, is now of

A lady school teacher, not many miles
from Lakeview, has adopted a novel
method to encourage punctuality among
her pupils. She has offered to kiss the
first pupil at school in the morning, and
it has worked like a charm. Every boy
in the school, over twelve years old, ar
rived an hour before the time for open
ing, the morning after the offer was
made, and two of them who were six
teen years old, which is only two years
younger than the teacher, were on hand
several hours easier.

IVeeased was a native of Alleghany
county, Pennsylvania. She was Urn
October 12, 1819. Her maiden name
was Kathprine Jane K. rarrior, Khe
cam to the Pacific Coast with her hus
band in 1853, and arrived in l-ke coun
ty. Oregon, in 1874. For eleven years
she resided in Summer Ike, this mini
ty, and the balaiu. of the time, to the
day of her death, on a little place a few
miles north of Ijikrvlow. Her husband
died in San Francisco three Years ago
last July.
"Grandma" Winkleman was one of
those good old souls who believed in
leiug just to all mankind. She was ec
centric in her way. and desired to live
alone, and for years she lived so, ap
parently in the full enjoyment of life.
She believed in living indeendf ntlv,
and even in her old ago was energetic
and thrifty, planning for future i.ros-
pvrity. Time Umiii time, as old age
came creeping on, she had tsen invited
to share a pleasant homo with her son
George at Summer l.ake, or with her
son I-ni in Warner, but she was eria
tent in her refusals, ami would never ac
cept their hospitality or claim the duty
of her sous to care for her. She owned
a small place a few miles from town and
had accumulated a tew hundred rhcep,
and see meil to live happily in caring for
w hat little she had of this world's goods.
After a few weeks of illness death
came to her in her ripe old age at H
o'clock last Suud.iy night, while sur
rounding her deathbed were her three

was mentioned by our correspondent at
New Pine Creek that William I. Smith
and Miss Delia WaJe were vis'.iog jq

but it has turned out to be significant
however, for news comes to us that on
Friday, March 8th, the young couple
were joined in holy matrimony and will
cross the sea of life together for weal or
woe. The bride and groom are Isith
well known and highly respited young
people of the State Line town. The
ceremony w as performed by Judge Spar
gur at his residence. The happy young
couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs
J. J. Inighlin of Pine Creek, who were
witnesses to the important event. The
groom is a clerk in the mercantile estab
lishment of I-iuou A Hartzog, and is
an industrious and wideawake young
man, and is a cousin of Mr. Hartzog of
that firm. The bride is the only daugh
ter of Mrs. J. W. Reeder and sister of
Bird Wade. She is a charming young
lady and is opiilar with everylssly.
The young couple will make their home
at New Pine Creek. .
Uncle Josh at Paisley.
All arrangements have been erfected
for the journey of the Sorosis Dramatic
Club to Paisley to reproduce the comedy
drama, "Uncle Josh," on Saturday even
ing next. The company will leave here
early Saturday morning and expect to
reach Paisley in time to witness the ball
game between the Paisley and Silver
Lake teams in the afternoon. After the
regular performance niein Iters of the
club will "walk fo dat cake." "Uncle
Josh" was so well received here, and
there has been so much favorable com
men I on the performance since it was
given, that there is no doubt but what
our Paisley friends will la) well enter
tained. We understand it is the inten
tion of the management to put on the
play at New Pine Creek on Saturday
evening, March 30ih.
