He might even opt for outnght repeal of much of the material if he were to consider revis ing that edition. In light of Watergate, he might eliminat«* the section that suggests: “Live Up to the Law and Be Licked." On the other hand he'd probably only slightly edit the portion sug gesting: "Never Deal with a Hot Poker on the Front Porch " By far the most provocative 1 chapter and the one that would create the greatest stir in po litical circles today, is one stating flatly: "Don’t Worry About the Women.” It took Kent 12 repetitious pages to discount the notion anything existed that could be even remotely described as “the woman vote.” Early in the chapter he de clared: ", . . there is no such .hing as sex solidarity in politics." Machine politicians of his day — only eight years after women first participated as voters in the HardingCox presidential campaign — re ferred to the woman vote as a “multiplication table." And Kent provided ample ammuni tion to prove women merely multiplied the votes of the men on which they were dependent In explaining himself, the author made a great deal of sense: ”, . . the greatest of all i reasons Is that notwithstand ing the large number of women who today mak«* their own liv ings, the pregnant fact remains that the institutions of matri mony and motherhood con demn the great bulk of women to an economic dependence im possible to escape and which has been the female lot since Gene and Hilma there were females." Women have been serving in the Oregon State Legislature since 1015. And though none yet has been elected to major state office, three have served in congress and pundits see 1070 as the year women will extend their political penetra tion even further. There's talk of a women secretary of state, the possi bility of a woman presiding over th«« state senate and an other sharing co-chairmanship of joint ways and means com mittee — a position from which she might even ascend to speaker of the house.
