»The status of pH in hair care
products has been raised late
ly. pH is a scale which indi
cates the acid or base level of
a substance. Neutral is 7,
therefore, anything above 7
is basic (or alkaline) and any
thing below 7 is acidic. It has
been long known that hair,
skin, scalp and nails were
the healthiest when the pH
was 4.5 to 5.5 (slightly acid
ic). Even water which is neu
tral (pH 7) is too alkaline
for the hair’s delicate pH
balance. Most hair prepara
tions, such as color treat
ments, permanents, straight
eners, and some shampoos —
particularly soap shampoos—
are alkaline. As a result, of
continued use the protective
cuticle layers of the hair fi
ber open, and the hair fibers
become more porous, and
when moisture is applied, the
hair swells, feels spongy and
becomes generally unmanage
able.
Too much acid will
cause the hair to be easily
broken when brushed or
combed. At a pH of 4.5 to 5.5,
the hair has its greatest elas
ticity, strength and lustre.
